Having followed this wine's evolution in barrel for the past few years, it is an honor to evaluate the final product. This Sassicaia has blossomed since my previous encounters with it as a young, awkward adolescent. The long- awaited 2015 Bolgheri Sassicaia represents a tremendous effort that comes together with seamless precision and focus. This is a confident and proud red wine from Tuscany. Starting with the primary material at hand, you sense the quality of fruit thanks to the wine's beautifully dark appearance and the rich texture it offers to the palate. The acidity is integrated, but more freshness still would have been welcomed in my view (and would also contribute to its longevity). The bouquet is amplified both in terms of volume and length. Its playlist includes dark berry fruit, spice, leather, licorice and roasted coffee bean. Yet, the mouthfeel is extremely graceful and silky. The wine's undisputed pedigree is showcased on the palate. It should also be noted that this edition of Sassicaia feels more ready and open to me. It will age and evolve beautifully, but the 2015 Sassicaia can also be enjoyed in the medium-term. This wine is all about the here and 2020 - 2045"

The first Cabernet grapes were picked on September 10th under perfect conditions, with yields a little lower than average. As is usual at Tenuta San Guido, the fruit for Sassicaia was gently crushed and fermented in stainless steel using natural yeasts. After the malolactic fermentation, the wine spent two years in French oak prior to bottling. This is certainly an exceptional Sassicaia, with a sumptuous nose of ripe, creamy black and red fruit with cedar and spice notes. The colour is by no means dark (as is often the case with Sassicaia), and the impression on the palate is one of controlled power underpinned by gorgeous sweetness and flowing elegance. This is a very confident wine with real authority and presence, beginning with a magnificent attack of rich cassis and ripe griotte cherry followed by cigar box and leather notes, and a long finish of savoury bay leaf and minerals. It's deceptively structured, the tannins wonderfully ripe, creamy and finely textured, while the juicy acidity also suggests that this wine has a very long life ahead of it. This 2015 exhibits everything that you'd want from Sassicaia - and more - because of its winning combination of winemaking savoir- faire, world-class terroir, old vine fruit, and an outstanding vintage. Love the aromas to this young red with blackcurrants, sage, cinnamon and five-spice character. Changes all the time. Full-bodied, dense and powerful with a ripe and rich tannin backbone that gives form and beauty to the ripe and beautiful fruit. Tight and very long. Approachable now but will reward more in five to six years. A classic Sassicaia."

Rich and concentrated, this red features black currant, blackberry, violet, mineral and spice flavors. Dense yet lively, structured yet impeccably balanced, with vibrant acidity driving the long, fruit-filled aftertaste. The oak is beautifully integrated. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The 2011 Bolgheri Sassicaia speaks to a broad, yet very distinct audience. I am absolutely charmed by this vintage. Soft cherry and blackberry confit emerge from the bouquet in thick, luscious waves. Leather, spice and tar play supporting roles. The wine offers a generous and expansive style. It also shows impressive balance and coherent inner integrity. This vintage certainly bears the hallmarks of a hot vintage, but it never feels overdone. It delivers volume, intensity and rich texture. This Sassicaia is a wine of enormous craftsmanship.

Ripe black cherry and blackberry flavors pick up accents of rosemary, mineral and spice in this red. Concentrated and intense, fresh and focused, leaning toward black currant and cedar notes on the solid finish. Racy midpalate. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

Sassicaia blev oprindeligt produceret oppe i bakkerne bag San Guido, men efterhånden som vinen fik succes er arealet blevet udvidet og da familien disponerer over mere end 2.500 hektar har der været nok at tage af. I dag kommer frugten således fra en mosaik af små parceller både oppe på skråningerne og nede omkring domainet. Mere end 90 ha. er der efterhånden tale om, og herfra ender de bedste partier Cabernet Sauvignon og Cabernet Franc i Sassicaia.

Bolden begyndte at trille da 1972-årgangen blev verdensberømt overnight, da den ved en blindsmagning placerede sig foran 33 andre Cabernet Sauvignon dominerede vine, herunder hele den måbende top fra Bordeaux. Den var det første varselsskud om, at der var såkaldte supertoscanere på vej og langsomt og på trods af at Sassicaia aldrig har været voluminøs, generøs og umiddelbar som dem en ung Robert Parker løftede frem mod berømmelse blev Sassicaia langsomt et ikon på den italienske vinscene.

Vinen har fået tid til at gennemgå den malolaktiske gæring i det rustfrie miljø inden den i december er blevet fyldt på franske fade (33% nye) hvor den er modnet i 24 måneder frem mod det endelige sammenstik og aftapningen på flaske.

Først i 1994, da det tilplantede areal havde passeret de 250 ha., kom revision af DOC-regulativerne, som lukkede rødvinene ind i varmen og samtidig placerede Sassicaia som en helt særlig Bolgheri Superiore. En position som blev udbygget i 2013 da myndigheder løftede Sassicaia op på den aller øverste hylde i det italienske hierarki. Sassicaia sin helt egen Denominazione di Origine Controllata Bolgheri Sassicaia.

Og det fantastiske er at  Sassicaia 's stjerne nu mere end 50 år senere blinker stærkere end nogen side, selvom der med omkring 200.000 årlige flasker ikke længe er tale om en lille nicheproduktion, og selvom vinen fortsat kan virke så urimeligt reserveret som ung, at anmeldernes rutinemæssige topvurderinger kan forekomme noget rutineprægede.

Det er i dag Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta 's søns adoptivsøn Sebastiano Rosa, der står bag Sassicaia i et nært samarbejde med en af Italiens førende kvindelige vinmagere Graziana Grassini. Giacomo Tachis havde spottet Graziana allerede i 1980'erne, da hun skabte sine første vine for Castello del Terriccio og han hentede hende ind i kredsen omkring San Guido. Så da den gamle mester lod sig pensionere i 2009 trådte Graziana Grassini op ved siden af Sebastiano Rosa.
