There are few brothers that can successfully run a business together without going Cane and Abel on each other - but Paul (marketing), Michael (winemaking) and rarely seen Milan (vineyards) Brajkovich at Kumeu River make an amazing team. Mind you, having met their strong-willed mother Melba (managing director) it is clearly the boss, who's been with the estate not to mention the workers from the beginning, keeping them in line. If you can taste history, duty and family pride in a glass, it's there in the Kumeu River Chardonnays. Either that or it's the years of continual improvement from trials, failures, successes and all the experience and determination that goes with sheer grind. Melba's late husband, Mate (pronounced Matty), started this winery in the 1940s. "We planted a lot of different varieties," Paul told me. "The Chardonnay came out as a star early-on." Sixty odd years on and the brothers have progressed their father's life's work, now producing some of New Zealand's greatest Chardonnays, not to mention the world's.

Maté's is usually the tightest, most linear of the KR Chards, and that's again the case. The 2016 Mate's Vineyard Chardonnay is marked by smoky new oak, but there's also pineapple and grapefruit notes that create a crisp, acidic spine. Draped off of that are hints of white peaches, roasted hazelnuts and tangerine. There's an almost briny zestiness to the lingering finish that sets it apart from the winery's other single-vineyard bottlings.

Producing New Zealand’s Greatest Chardonnays, Not To Mention The World’s.

Quite a concentrated chardonnay with lime, citrus, hazelnut, bran biscuit and a suggestion of tropical fruits, mango and pineapple. A weighty wine with impressive length and complexity. Good now but will obviously respond well to bottle-age 08 AUG 2017

Winemaker
Michael Brajkovich MW
In 1990, Maté Brajkovich reworked the land and planted a new vineyard of Chardonnay vines on the site of the original vineyard that he and his family purchased in March 1944. The first grapes from this vineyard were harvested in March 1993, the year following Maté’s death. The resulting wine was released in November 1994 to coincide with celebrations marking the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Brajkovich Family’s arrival at Kumeu River.

The Mate’s Vineyard is usually the most reserved and unyielding when young with a nose that is very closed, just giving hints of the golden queen peach and mineral notes that we expect from Mate’s Vineyard. On the palate however, the flavour is very concentrated and distinctly richer than the other 2016 wines, but maintaining a perfect balance and freshness that sets this wine apart and makes it wonderful. This is a wine of immense concentration that will be very long lived.
