Robert Parker 94-95P
I tasted an unbottled sample of the 2016 PS, which was the final blend waiting to be bottled in a couple of weeks. It's quite oaky—marked by the élevage of 19 months in new French oak—spicy, toasty and creamy. It has a full-bodied palate with abundant, fine-grained tannins. This will need time in bottle. It's a wine aimed for fans of powerful, concentrated and generously oaked wines. They expect to fill some 40,000 bottles in late June 2018.
Aalto has reduced the oak in its wines, as they saw that the latest vintages had polished tannins and Mariano García decided the wines needed less time in barrel, while at the same time it helped to keep the freshness in bottle. They are still modern and generously oaked Ribera del Duero reds that are a great commercial success. 2014 is a ripe and powerful vintage that has good freshness. A balanced year. These are wines with a marked and specific character, for fans of the style.
