The 2012 Pinot Noir Carpe Noctem is an individual barrel selection in terms of weight, texture and intensity. It is 75% Eola-Amity Hills and 25% Yamhill-Carlton fruit and undergoes malolactic in barrel, where it is aged for 17 months in French oak (58% new). Deeper in color than the Virtus Ex, it has quite an intense bouquet with a light marine influence upon the dark plum and raspberry coulis scents. The palate is medium-bodied with supple and harmonious tannin, smooth in the mouth with no rough edges, it gradually builds with a peacock's tail of dark plum, mulberry and hints of dried blood. You could actually broach this now, but I would suggest allowing 12 to 24 months in bottle.

Philosophy:
Confero {to bring together} is, and will always be, the practice of bringing distinct vineyards and clones of Pinot Noir together from differing sub-regions within the Willamette valley. From this ideal, we are able to capture unique strengths of each parcel and adjoin them with qualities of other individual sites, thus enhancing the overall complexity and depth a given vintage can provide.

Eide’s 2012 Pinot Noir Blanc Philtrum (“love potion”) may or may not live up to its name – I’ll leave it for others to test that – but this first ever attempt by him to vinify Pinot Noir white demonstrates (as do a few others, notably Jay McDonald’s at EIEIO) that profoundly as well as distinctively delicious wine can result. (And considering the superb Pinot-based sparkling wines rendered by Argyle and Soter, mightn’t one anticipate this?) Rows at Hawks View and Willakia were singled out for grooming toward this end; then picked October 10, five days ahead of the fruit that was taken from these sites for reds. After very gentle pressing (the finished wine is classic “partridge eye”-colored) the juice was fermented and aged partly in stainless tanks and partly in half-new 400-liter barrels, with around half of the total volume undergoing malo-lactic conversion. Sweet corn, Rainer cherry and fresh lime are mingled with freshly milled and lightly toasted grains and garlanded in honeysuckle and wisteria on a striking nose and polished, subtly creamy, yet infectiously juicy and refreshingly animated palate. A blue crab-like sweet, saline, iodine-tinged savor lends intense saliva inducement to the long finish of a wine that is going to intrigue and delight while performing amazing feats at table. For how long – who can say? Why don’t you rush to buy some of this terrific value and make answering that question part of the delicious discovery that awaits you?

The 2012 Pinot Noir Virtus Ex comes from Eola-Amity Hills and tends to be the slowest to evolve and what Eric sees as the most Old World influence. The vines are located on volcanic soils and includes 15% whole-cluster fruit due to the relatively longer hang time. It sees 15 months in 42% new French oak. It came in at 3.3 pH and 14% alcohol so no acidification was necessary. The nose makes an immediate impression: redcurrant, wild strawberry and undergrowth, almost mulchy scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, plenty of refined red cherry and cranberry fruit interlaced with spice, leading to a finish that has plenty of finesse and Old World charm. This is a superb wine from winemaker Eric Eide.

“Bright and refreshing, with lemon curd, pineapple and gentle spice flavors wound around a lively core of green apple and crème fraîche notes, persisting against refined acidity.  

TASTING NOTES 
Balance can invariably be found in the sparkling winemaking process, even in the warmer growing seasons such as 2009. Being Pinot Noir dominate, Knudsen Vineyard Brut has always been on the lusher end of the sparkling spectrum. The trick is to find the mineral backbone to carry it. As such, we made a few adjustments in our winemaking and blending to find that balance in 2009. To start with, the percentage of Pinot Noir is down to 75% and the Chardonnay is up to 25% from our traditional 80/20 split. Though 5% may seem like a small number, it's amazing what a little extra chardonnay can do for the wine's edginess. We also adjusted our fermentation regime, as the cuvée was fermented in 50% neutral oak and 50% stainless steel. The stainless component retains a freshness and vivacity, while the neutral oak barrels allow for rich, creamy texture. Violaceous, candied ginger, Jamaican allspice, and plum. Paying tribute to John Coltrane, this all leads to "rising harmonies to a level of blissful stability...” Enjoy.
 
VINTAGE NOTES
2009 was all about farming to balance Mother Nature’s surprises. Argyle’s farming culture got the crop level right on. We stripped leaves after the burning sun of August and in time for the Labor Day rains. We also believed September’s drying East wind forecast and put a security of water onto the vines to help them ride out the drying, late season heat with a maximum of ripening—which is the name of the game here in the Willamette Valley. Picking was unusually “segmented” this year. Usually we can say that every 200’ rise in elevation can mean 10 days difference in ripening and thus picking. But, in 2009 Argyle picked high and low elevation fruit at the same time! We picked all the sparkling fruit, then rested for a couple of days, then all the Chardonnay for still wine, rested another few days, then all the red came in. The resulting wines are gorgeous, perky, and sexy. I don’t know that I have seen a more sensuous expression of flavour and aromas in Argyle’s 26 years of Willamette Valley winemaking.

TASTING NOTES
The balance and integrity of the 2010 growing season is striking, especially when viewed through the prism of our 2010 Vintage Brut. Lemon peel, strawberry pith, fresh ciabatta dough. The center is downreaching and creamy.
In the background, a faint, brine accent persists, remnant of freshly shucked Kumumoto oysters. Energetic acidity
and length, there is a satisfying resolution about this cuvée, inspiring one to reach for another glass of the fizz!

VINTAGE NOTES
The growing season started out unusually cool, delaying grape flowering until well into July. Poor pollination produced smaller than average clusters. Even then we were compelled to further thin our crop, removing grape clusters to get the yields well below average. There was just not enough growing season left to ripen a normal crop.
A season saving string of 80+ degree days at the end of September gave us all hope of ripening and put life back into our plans to make red wine. A bit of warm, soaking rain in early October sent us into further removing leaves and working to keep fruit healthy. Mid October brought an great, dry forecast and harvest began with a bang to beat predicted October 23rd rains. Red wine was harvested with gusto beginning the 17th and we wrapped up harvest the 21st October. Keys to our success were, small crop, healthy fruit, and patience to wait until the very end of the season to pick.

The 2015 Pinot Noir Dundee Hills is a blend of Maresh, Juliard, Weber, Gehrts and Folie Hill vineyards. It has a fresh and vibrant bouquet with red cherry and wild strawberry fruit, touches of blood orange with fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin - a mixture here of red and black fruit, meaty in style with a Pommard-like finish that lingers in the mouth.

The 2012 Pinot Noir Juliard Vineyard lies right above the Weber Vineyard, though it is very different in profile: much more rugged and tends to produce earthier and more savory wines. The vines were planted in 1977 and 1988 and contain what is known as the "Upright Clone." There is some stem addition here to create a little chewiness in the wine and it includes just one new Sirugue barrel (even though Jim remarked that they tend to leak). The bouquet is very complex with a mixture of red and black fruit, Italian cured meat, dried blood and brown spices. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, savory on the entry, with hints of tobacco and wild fennel. This is a feral, untamed Oregon Pinot Noir surfeit with character and charm.

The 2014 Maresh Vineyard Pinot Noir has a beautiful bouquet with wonderful precision. The vine age does show through here (44-years-old now) with crisp detailed red berry fruit that just exudes Pinoté. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, very well-judged acidity, touches of truffle and undergrowth tincturing the red berry fruit that fans out wonderfully towards the long and satisfying finish. This is a great Pinot Noir from an estate that seems to have thrived in 2014.

The 2012 Chardonnay, aged for 11 months in used French oak, has a lovely bouquet: lemon curd, fresh pear, crab apple and white peach, a hint of lanolin just in the background - all very well defined. The palate is very well balanced with brioche-tinged citrus fruit, a keen thread of acidity and a very harmonious finish: vivacious and long. Excellent. 

I tasted three wines from Ayoub during my lengthy sessions in the UK just before Christmas. Looking back, it was perhaps my first encounter with the quality of Robert Brittan's winemaking skills because these were absolute gems. Ayoub is owned by Mohamed "Mo" Ayoub who planted four acres of vine in the volcanic soils of the Dundee Hills back in 2001. I tasted three recent releases and all come highly recommended.

Bright ruby-red. A complex, highly perfumed bouquet displays ripe dark berry and cherry scents, complicated by notes of peppery spices, smoked meat and incense. Urgent and focused on the palate, offering concentrated black raspberry, bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors and a strong suggestion of spicecake. Brawny yet surprisingly lithe Pinot that closes with powerful thrust and silky tannins that come in late, adding framework and grip.

No doubt, the finest jewel in the Bergström crown is the Bergström Vineyard - our first vineyard planted in 1999 in the Dundee Hills AVA. These volcanic hillsides yield wines that often show a darker side as well as a ferrous mineral quality that speaks of the deep and ancient lava flows from which the vines’ roots pull minerals and nutrients. The 2012 Bergström Vineyard Pinot Noir is dark ruby in color with deep purple and violet tints. This wine has complex aromas ranging from intense black cherry and dark raspberry to smoked meat, dark chocolate, bacon fat, black pepper and minty spice. While powerful and impressive now, the undertones of roses and sweet violets and the telltale elegance of the Bergström Vineyard shine through and promise years of great drinking opportunities. This is our most cellar-worthy Pinot Noir, which slowly unfolds like a peacock’s tail to deliver long-term drinking pleasure. John Bergström kom oprindeligt fra Nord Sverige, men flyttede som ung håbefuld teenager til USA. Efter stor succes med en læge praksis i Portland og med stor interesse i det boom af lokale produkter Oregon bød på, købte han midt i 1990erne et stykke land i Dundee Hills i Willamette Valley. Josh, den ene af 5 børn havde altid vidst at han ville være selvstændig, tog udfordringen op. Rejste til Bourgogne og tog 2 års skole gang på 1 år indenfor vin. I 1999 kom han retur og lavede af 4 tons druer den første Bergström vin. Josh er den daglige leder & winemaker samt vineyard manager. Han arbejder totalt komprmiløst på at lave så høj kvalitet som muligt. Der arbejdes efter biodynamiske metoder, med naturlig gødning af alt druekvas og afskårne grene fra vinstokkene som komposteres og gen anvendes sammen med lokalt hø og ”affald” fra et mejeri. Udbyttet er ekstrem lavt og der høstes meget sent for at få højest mulig koncentration. Der benyttes mange forskellige kloner af Pinot Noir fra forskellige typer jordbund, som alle plukkes, presses og gæres for sig inden de endelige blandinger fortages. Grundet Josh´ tætte relation til Bourgogne, benyttes kun de bedste af de bedste egetræs fade derfra.

14. årgang af Cumberland Reserve er et fantastisk eksempel på, hvad biodynamisk landbrug og optimal ‘blend’ kan præstere fra Willamette Valley. Markerne som bruges til denne vin er primært Selice og Le Pre du Col tilføjet små mængder fra Bergström Vineyard, Winery Block og Gregory Ranch Vineyard. 

Josh Bergström referer altid til Cumberland Reserve som hans visitkort, da denne vin år efter år viser Bergström stilen, udtrykker årgangens DNA og samtidig er tro mod hvad Pinot Noir fra Willamette Valley står for.

Årgang 2014 er fremragende…….ubetinget noget af det bedste som Oregon har præsteret. Druerne kommer 100% fra egne marker og farven fremstår Burgundisk med god farve. Næsen er indbydende med toner af brombær og blåbær, svag indblanding fra tobak, god stenet mineralitet afsluttet kombineret med hel klynge af urter. Vinen har god og fyldig krop men er samtidig afbalanceret med saftig syre og tanniner med god sødme. Denne vin kan drikkes idag eller nydes over de næste 15 år.

Dette er 5. årgang af Gregory Ranch Pinot Noir som er dyrket i Yamhill Carlton AVA. I kølige årgange er Gregory Ranch Vineyard er en af de sidste lokaliteter der skal høstes, og domineret af  balanceret syre og frugt. I varme år er Gregory Ranch en af de mest modne vine med meget rigt udtryk på grund af den tynde jord, meget lave naturlige udbytter og eksponering mod øst. Gregory Ranch Pinot Noir 2014 er uden tvivl den bedste til dato…. 

Vinen har en meget mørk rubinrød farve hvor man hurtigt kommer til at tænke på sorte kirsebær.  Aromaerne er dybe, mørke, domineret af af sorte frugter, oksekød bouillon, krydderier, sort lakrids, krydrede urter og tobaksblade. Dette er en meget koncentreret ung vin der har mange år foran sig. Rig smag af sorte kirsebær og sort hindbær fylder munden fulgt op af finkornede frugter og bløde tanniner, der giver denne vin ikke kun magt men også blødhed.

Winemakers Note
The 2015 Silice Pinot Noir is by far my favorite, most unique expression from this great terroir in the 14 years we have been farming and crafting this vineyard on Calkins Lane. The rolling sandy hills of the Silice vineyard have found their savory, sweet, and silky voice. This is quite different from the 2014 Silice. The whole-cluster ferments, paired with the charming and vibrant character of the 2015 vintage, have yielded a wine that will make lovers of whole-cluster wines rush to secure an allocation.

The wine is a deep and vibrant ruby red and fills the glass with an aromatic bouquet of fresh roses and violets, warm spices, candied fruit, and savory herbs. Silice has cool and reticent flavors of the perfect summer berries that are crunchy and bursting with juicy acidity. It has great body with a long and complex finish with notes of smoke, spice, and exotic wood. This is not an overtly ripe or jammy wine but rather it lives on the treble end of the spectrum.

Winemakers note:
The 2012 Silice Pinot Noir is dark ruby with dark violet tints. Its explosive aromatics burst from the glass with high-toned red and purple flowers, bright raspberry, cherry and a comforting sweet, spicy profile reminiscent of fresh-baked berry pies. But for all its opulence, there is a stony mineral cut to this wine that keeps it honest and poignant, and it is this harmony between ripe lushness and sandstone minerality that makes the wine so delicious now. Our 2012 Silice will drink well upon release and should perform well in the bottle for the next 5-8 years.

The 2015 vintage marks 12 years of Bergström Wines working with Shea Vineyard. Of the 140 acres planted in this world class vineyard site, 15 acres of fruit comes to our winery, making us the largest producing client of the 22 wineries working with the Sheas. These steep and shallow marine sedimentary soils give way to powerfully tannic wines that are blessed with a sweet berry perfume. 

The 2015 Shea Pinot Noir has a dark, red ruby color. The aromas are bright red fruited, primarily rhubarb and strawberry with a sweet toasted oak, brown sugar and hint of baking spices. Vibrant and juicy with great texture, this wine showcases the ripe vintage but maintains freshness with lush cherry flavor.

This vintage was one that put all Oregon farmers and winemakers to the ultimate test. Although, if the work was done well in the field and the winery and the yields were low, the wines will prove that Oregon's Willamette Valley is truly the most authentic, unique and successful cool climate wine region in the new world, ideal for growing and producing world-class Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.The 2011 Sigrid Chardonnay is our flagship Chardonnay, handcrafted from two of our five estate vineyards: de Lancellotti and Gregory Ranch, as well as from two of Oregon’s greatest Chardonnay vineyard sites: Temperance Hill and Anderson Family Vineyard. In classic Sigrid fashion, the aromas burst from the glass revealing orange blossom, ginger, saffron, lemon pound cake, Asian spices, buttered corn and clove-studded citrus fruits. The mouthfeel is broad and unctuous for the vintage with a vibrancy and electric feel which showcases this year’s amazing fresh fruit flavors of lemon, tangerine and lime. It is rich and layered with textures and yet intensely vibrant at the same time. The potential here is great for extended cellaring and enjoyment for 12+ years.

Dette er 9. årgang af Sigrid Chardonnay og kun de allerbedste tønder bruges fra de fem Chardonnay Vinmarker. Alle markerne dyrkes Biodynamisk og Sigrid har været førende i Oregon Chardonnay siden dens begyndelse. 

I næsen er der citron, appelsin, antydning af ingefær og cookie. Sigrid er meget mineralsk og præcis i sit udtryk mens frugten domineres af citron med safran i baggrunden. I finishen findes brioche og kandiseret citronskal mens vinen i munden er levende med en rig mid palette men stram og præcis i det første indtryk og den lange finish. Jordbunden præget af kalk fornemmes og der er masser af charmerende frugt, silkeagtig tekstur og lagringspotentialet fornemmes klart.

Grace og Kenn Evenstad havde fra starten en klar målsætning med Domaine Serene - de ville producere verdens bedste Pinot Noir. Om det er lykkedes....eller om det vil lykkes, må være op til den enkelte at vurdere. De har dog ved en række smagninger udplaceret flere vine fra Domaine Romanee Conti. Til meget stor overraskelse for de fleste. Senest ved en større smagning i UK, hvor Domaine Serene Cuvee Evenstad 2006 var oppe mod Richebourg 2002. Med Evenstad som vinder.

The 2012 Pinot Noir Evenstad Reserve was picked from late summer after one of the driest on record. There was better heat accumulation, according to Erik Kramer, but he does not regard it has a hot vintage. It was a low yield at around 1.7 and 1.8 tons per acre, partly due to a preflowering cluster removal. The skin-to-pulp ratio was very high and it was raised in 65% new oak over 16 months. It has a deep garnet color. The bouquet is in stark contrast with strawberry pastille and raspberry coulis, hints of iodine developing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe red berry fruit interlaced with sea salt and white pepper. There is an undercurrent of gaminess to this 2012 that lends intrigue toward the finish that gently grips the mouth. Not as opulent as other 2012 Pinot Noirs that I have tasted, but clearly very well crafted by winemaker Erik Kramer and with a prosperous future ahead. 

Domaine Serene's first vintage was 1990, so the upcoming harvest will be their 20th. Consistent high quality has been a benchmark of the winery and the 2007s will do nothing to change that. Ken and Grace Evenstad were kind enough to show me their first two vintages of Domaine Serene Pinot Noir, 1990 and 1991. Both wines were made by Ken Wright. Both have reached their peak, the 1991 a bit more advanced than the 1990, but they are both beautiful for current drinking. They are just two more examples of how well-made Willamette Valley Pinot Noir from strong vintages can drink well for 20+ years.

The Evenstad Reserve Pinot Noir is our agship wine, and is the de ning standard by which all of our Pinot Noirs are measured. We hand select our best barrels each year to create a reserve wine that is consistent in both its superior quality, and avor pro le. 

A true illustration of the art of blending, the 2013 Evenstad Reserve Pinot Noir is a wonderfully complex elegant wine with in- triguing notes of black cherry, currants, cloves and nutmeg. With some air, notes of allspice, cardamom and black tea emerge from the glass with a subtle lift of cocoa powder and vanilla. In the mouth, the wine shows elegance and nesse with brooding depth and concentration, vibrant red fruits, silky tannins and great persistence.

Our Jerusalem Hill Vineyard is our lowest elevation vineyard, and is located 16 miles south of the Dundee hills in the Eola-Amity Hills. This vineyard is planted in Woodburn sedimentary soils brought into the valley during the Missoula Floods, 13,000 to 15,000 years ago.

The 2013 Jerusalem Hill Pinot Noir is deep ruby-red with aromas of ripe raspberries, cedar cigar box, baking spices and slate. The mouthfeel is round and generous with layers of cocoa and toasty oak unfolding with red currants and cranberries. The wine is silky and well-balanced with concentrated, opulent flavors, delivering a great balance between richness and flavor-driven intensity and a wonderfully persistent finish.

The 2008 Pinot Noir Winery Hill Vineyard is also made from Dijon clones. Not quite as expressive as the other single vineyard bottlings, it nevertheless delivers a lovely nose of spicy red fruits, incense, cinnamon, and cherry blossom. An ultra-premium Oregon Pinot Noir with consistency vintage to vintage due to the blending of Pinot Noir from each of our main estates. Named for the county where all of the Domaine Serene estates are found, the inaugural vintage of this blend pre-dates the designation of the Yamhill-Carlton AVA and includes grapes from the Dundee Hills and Eola-Amity AVAs.

The 2013 Yamhill Cuvée offers a true bouquet rich with aromas of Bing cherry, blackberry, and dried herbs and spices. The aromas expand out onto the mid-palate to deliver some wonderful- ly intense red fruits. Polished and graceful, this wine is seamlessly integrated with playful tannins, finishing with spicy notes. The textural profile is refined, silky, elegant and incredibly pleasing for any occasion.

The historic Hyland Vineyard was planted in 1971, just five years after Pinot Noir was introduced to Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Planted with rare and prized own-rooted, old vine Pinot Noir, the vineyard lies exposed to cool mari- time winds and coastal influences via the Van Duzer corridor break in the coastal range.
Elevations of 600-800 feet and the volcanic soils of the McMinnville sub-AVA provide ideal growing conditions.
The 2012 vintage was glorious and warm. Grapes ripened gradually during a beautiful, dry summer and fall, yielding healthy, dark fruit rich in flavor and color. Hyland Vineyard is one of our cooler, wilder sites, located on an exposed vol- canic ridge at an elevation of 600-800 feet , with a front row view of the coastal range. Buffeted by winds and cool ocean breezes, the grapes are influenced by cooler nights and marine air.
Our own rooted, old vine fruit was entirely de-stemmed and aged for 14 months in French oak, 25% of which was new. A moderate purple-ruby color leads towards plum, black cherry and smoked blue fruits mixed with volcanic mineral and stone. Layers of ripe fruit seamlessly integrate with judicious barrel treatment, yielding a medium bodied, tactile and tex- tured Pinot with dark, ripe fruit and balance befitting the warm growing season and unique site that is Hyland.
– a true Gothic Wine.

An Exceptional Vintage
Our 2012 Gothic ‘Nevermore’ Pinot Noir was harvested during the second and third weeks of October, from three vineyards in distinct sub-AVA’s of the Willamette Valley: Monk’s Gate (Yamhill-Carlton), Hyland (McMinnville), and Willakia (Eola-Amity Hills). A dry, consistently warm summer provided us with mature fruit harvested at the peak of ripeness, indicative of our individual vineyard sites- quite the counterpoint to cool 2011 growing sea- son. 2012 is shaping up to be the best vintage since 2008 for Willamette Valley Pinot Noir.


Vinification Method
Post-harvest, our fruit was hand-sorted and de-stemmed. After a brief cold soak, each vineyard parcel was vini- fied and aged individually prior to blending. The wine aged for 10 months undisturbed (save for a single rack- ing) in French oak, of which fifteen percent was new. A slow, natural malolactic fermentation completed in early spring. Bottling took place the last week of August following harvest.


Tasting Notes
A violet/crimson hue immediately draws attention to the ripe and temperate vintage. Aromas of classic, dark Or- egon Pinot Noir fruit, brimming with black cherry and wild dark berries, are complimented by hints of spice from restrained use of new oak. Layered flavors of ripe, luscious blue and black berries wash over a core of delicious fresh fruits. A balanced, velvet mouthfeel retains hallmark softness and acidity. The palate is balanced and clean, with a lingering, palate cleansing finish. A delicious Nevermore!

Many years ago we went through agony to put out a late harvest Viognier - a wine made by partially drying Viognier grapes, then pressing them to extract a limited amount of very intense juice.
Making this wine takes up much valuable time during a ridiculously busy time of year. Add to that the physical nature of making this stuff - piling grapes on trays, stacking them, unstacking them, dumping dried fruit to bins, destemming, pressing - and one might wonder why we would submit to this torture!
Well, we’ve done it again! In 2013 we used Gewurztraminer grapes from Kevin Chamber’s famed Resonance Vineyard.
It has been dubbed “The Precious” by the winery crew.

The grapes for this Pinot Noir came off two precious vineyards: Resonance, and Wyeast. Yes, a pair of very nice of sources!
These are two of our favorite vineyards. We chose to blend strengths together and offer a less expensive, high quality wine.
The wine is dark, aromatic and has great natural acidity. At this stage of development, most of its character is in a long, long finish - a good sign for the future of the wine!

Cool, dry weather completed our October - the sort of year that can produce our best Pinot Noirs.

Sweet Sydney was produced from frozen late harvest Zinfandel off a vineyard near the Dalles, OR. Already very high in sugar from a long, late harvest; a short stint in a freezer further concentrated the sugars, flavors and aromas leading to this monumental beverage.
Starting brix was 37%. The residual sugar is 21%.
Wave after wave of intense flavor will overwhelm your palate as you sample this wine. Five minutes later, the taste will have hardly diminished. The wine is light in alcohol, heavy on flavor.
The wine is named after our beautiful 26 year-old daughter, Sydney.
Dessert for us is a bottle of Sweet Sydney and cheese - any cheese as nothing can overwhelm this wine!

Beautiful, medium rose color with noteworthy clarity.  A fine bead in the glass is pronounced, with aromas of cranberry, huckleberry and baked apple at once pleasing.  On the palate, the wine is immediately expressive, ad quite dry with tantalizing minerality, yet fresh and juicy all at the same time.  Additional flavors of bing cherry, raspberry, and créme brulee abound, along with baking spices and fresh bread.  The mouthfeel is creamy, yet brisk with a crisp, refreshing finish that isn't short on length.  Hailing from the cooler 2010 vintage, the wine has real precision and focus with intensity that combines a sense of seriousness with elegance all at once.  An altogether engaging and complex Brut Rosé, that while delicious today, will also improve in the bottle over the next 2-3 years under ideal cellaring conditions.

TASTING NOTE
Immediately engaging with a nose of plums, spice, black cherries and earth.  The wine is ripe and rich, but with good underlying acidity.  Similar themes on the palate as expressed in the aromatic profile, with dark chocolate notes.  Brambly, darkly fruited and very showy as a young wine, it has medium body and finishes strong with balanced tannins.

The 2009 Pinot Noir Shea Vineyard Special Selection displays a similar personality but with more density, richness, and concentration. It has enough ripe tannin to evolve for several years and will provide pleasure through 2024.

As usual, owner/winemaker Mark Vlossak has turned out a first-class collection of new releases.

Production Notes

Shea Vineyard is located in the Yamhill foothills, 35 miles southwest of Portland, Oregon. The Pinot noir was planted in 1990 on a hillside of shallow Willakenzie soil in the SW corner of the vineyard. It has a southeast exposure at an elevation of 350' to 500'.

The grapes were fermented in a Burgundy oak fermenter after two days of cold maceration. The wine aged in French oak barrels for 16 months before bottling. The Special Selection was selected from the four best barrels.

This unique cuvée represents the most rigorous selection of grapes and wines in each vintage. 49 cases were produced and this wine is available for sale only as a future.
This Pinot noir complements sweet meat entrees - lamb chops, filet, grilled salmon. When served young, this wine is best decanted or allowed to breathe for several hours. It is drinkable at release and will benefit from aging up to 12 years.

Tasting Notes

The 2009 Shea Special Selection has vibrant aromas of berries, rose, dried flowers and spice notes. Its bright fruit flavors have the same mix of red and black fruits. The spice and floral components serve to add dimension to the sweetness of the fruit. Its very broad texture flows over your tongue and palate exposing the nuances of its diverse flavors. Its substantial tannins are ripe, underscoring the intensity achieved in the northern Willamette Valley AVA's.

Given the balance, complexity and structure of the '09 Shea Special Selection, it can be enjoyed in its youth, but will gain focus with 8-12 years of bottle age. The optimal window for enjoyment is between 2016 and 2020. 49 cases.

Production Notes

Seven Springs Vineyard, overlooking the fertile Willamette Valley from its position in the hills west of Salem, produced the Pinot noir grapes for this wine. The grapes were grown on a steep southeast slope, protected from the maritime winds by a fold in the hills. The vineyard blocks were planted in 1988 and 1992.

The grapes were fermented in two Burgundy oak fermenters after two days of cold maceration. The wine aged French oak barrels for 19 months before bottling. The Cuve de chene, special selection was selected from the four best barrels out of a total of 47.

This unique cuvée represents the most rigorous selection of grapes and wines in each vintage. Only 96 cases are produced and this wine is available only as a future.

Tasting Notes

In 2005, the Pinot noir from Seven Springs Vineyard was so exceptional that I decided to make only one 'special selection' and filled both wood fermenters with Seven Springs Pinot noir fruit. This future offering is selected from the four best barrels out of 47 produced. This wine reflects the best grapes picked in 2005, the best fermentation, and the best four barrels from that lot.

Futures are being offered beginning Thanksgiving weekend 2006. A maximum of 96 cases are available for sale. Sold in six bottle lots, the finished wine will be available for pick-up (or shipped) in September 2007.

Endnu engang er det lykkedes os at finde en US pinot, hvor der virkelig er tale om value for Money, læg dertil at der er tale om en Oregon Pinot Noir. Union Wine Company, som producerer Underwood, har for længst etableret sig i USA som seriøs leverandør af god Oregon pinot noir til priser hvor de fleste kan være med. Ryan Harms, som ejer Union Wine Company, flyttede til Oregon i 2001. Her arbejdede han som winemaker på en del “high end” Oregon vinhuse. I 2005 tog han springet og startede Union Wine Company. Målet var, og er stadig, at producere Oregon Pinot Noir til priser, hvor langt de fleste kan være med, uden at gå på kompromis med kvaliteten. 

The Wine
