The 2010 Howell Mountain is simply magnificent. Inky, deep, and full-bodied to the core, the 2010 blasts out of the glass with graphite, pencil shavings, menthol, melted road tar, plum, cassis and licorice notes. The 2010 is an exciting, viscerally thrilling wine that takes hold of the sense and never lets up. Today, it is firing on all cylidners. The Howell Mountain is the only Abreu wine that incorporates Malbec, a variety that seems to work magic here. The 2010 is 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Cabernet Franc, 8% Petit Verdot, 8% Malbec and 5% Merlot.

Abreu vineyards is named after the founder, David Abreu. David Abreu earned his reputation as one of the top vineyard managers in Napa.  Abreu followed his father and grandfather in the profession of vineyard management and has worked with countless growers in Napa including: Harlan Estate, Colgin Cellars, Staglin Family Vineyards, Blankiet Estate, Bressler Vineyards, Pahlmeyer Vineyards, Sloan Estate, Grace Family and numerous other well-known California wineries. In fact, it’s harder to find a top vineyard in the Napa Valley that David Abreu is not involved with. As of 2011, Abreu controls close to 70 acres of prime, vineyard land in Napa.  Abreu Vineyards currently produces 5 wines, Madrona Ranch, Thorevilos, Capella, Howell Mountain and Rothwell Hyde. All the wines of Abreu Vineyards are California Cabernet Sauvignon based.

David Abreu is a perfectionist with all his clients vineyards and his property is no exception.  Similar to how Chateau Haut Brion in Pessac Leognan picks, Abreu prefers harvesting in the early morning, taking advantage of the cooler temperatures. The fruit is sorted twice, before and the fruit is fermented with whole berries. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is placed in 100% new, French, oak barrels where it remains for two  years before bottling. They hold the wine of Abreu Vineyards for an additional two years before offering it to an eager list of customers that purchase directly from him.

Another key to the success of Abreu Vineyards is the Brad Grimes, the wine maker of Abreu. It’s the combination of Brad Grimes, David Abreu and the vineyards that produce one of the top wines from Napa. Stylistically, the wine is elegant, balanced and refined, yet it possess copious amounts of perfectly ripe fruit and silky tannins. Big, rich and ripe, but never over the top, this is a great example of what Napa does best.

Perhaps the greatest compliment I can pay the 2010 Rothwell Hyde, Abreu's rarely seen second wine, is that Brad Grimes served it last in our tasting and it more than held it's own. Sure, there is plenty of vintage 2010 pedigree, along with the typical Abreu textural richness, but it is the wine's overall balance that leaves the most lasting impression. Rothwell Hyde is made from a selection of the wines that don't go into the four main labels and is sold mostly through the mailing list and in a few select restaurants. If you see the 2010, grab it.

David Abreu's 2010 Thorevilos stands apart from all of the other wines in this range for its massive, inky concentration. It is also the last of these wines to be released, which may explain its intense power. A host of graphite, smoke, incense, tobacco, spice and black fruit gradually open up, but the 2010 is a wine for the future. I won't touch another bottle until at least age ten, even though that is almost certainly not going to be enough time to find the wine at its peak of expression.

As a set of wines, it is hard to surpass the four cuvees from the estate vineyards of David Abreu.

One of their best efforts ever (and that says something, given how many fine wines have been produced under the Bacio Divino moniker), the 2013 Bacio Divino, which is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (sourced from four different vineyards) and Sangiovese (from the Benessere Vineyard in St. Helena), is a beautifully complex wine with big, sexy notes of new saddle leather, blackberry and blackcurrant fruit, silky tannins, a full-bodied, voluptuous texture and lots of personality and glycerin-filled fruit.

The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Janzen Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard wraps around the palate with expressive dark red fruit, spices, crushed flowers and violets. At first relatively supple, the 2009 closes down quickly with air, which suggests it needs at least a few more years in bottle. I also see less of the gravitas than is typical of To Kalon Cabernets. Sweet floral notes and a burst of small red berries inform the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2024.

The generic 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa is outstanding, and better than the single-vineyard 2011s. Lots of Christmas fruitcake, white chocolate, coffee bean, blackcurrants and sweet dark cherries are all present in this medium to full-bodied, lush, heady wine that’s a reasonably fair value in the luxury-priced scheme of Cabernet Sauvignons from Napa.Bacio Divino, a project of Claus Janzen and his son, offered three vintages of their single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons and a couple generic bottlings, plus other assorted bottlings from their terrific value-priced wines, such as Pazzo. There are also a couple of Burgundy-styled wines made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the Dutton Ranch, which I decided to include since they’re the only Sonoma County wines from Bacio Divino.

As one would suspect from the vintage style, the 2012 The Matriarch Proprietary Red Blend is one of the strongest efforts to date for this cuvée. The flamboyant, exuberant nature of the vintage serves this wine well, since it comes from the softer lots. This wine can be drunk now or cellared for another 15 or more years. Beautiful fruit such as cassis and blackberry are interwoven with forest floor, charcoal and barbecue smoke, all followed by an elegant, expansive and savory wine with very ripe tannin, adequate acidity, and a long finish. The color is a dense plum/purple and the wine delicious already, as well as complex, but capable of easily lasting 15+ years.

These exceptionally impressive wines from Bill Harlan are all majestic in 2012. There are between 500 and 600 cases of each of these essentially single vineyard wines from five separate micro-climates in Napa Valley, with the exception of the Matriarch, which comes from the barrels and lots culled from the different single vineyards that were considered slightly more forward and less profound than the individual wines. All of them have great singularity and are made with absolutely no compromises. In the great vintages, such as 2012 and no doubt 2013, these wines clearly have 25-35+ years of aging potential. I wouldn’t be surprised in certain years to see them go on for 50 or more years.

The estate’s 2009 Proprietary Blend Melbury presents an intriguing combination of pure sensuality in its aromas and flavors, but backed up by serious tannins. Dark raspberry jam, flowers, sweet spices and crushed rocks all come to life in this deeply expressive, resonant wine. Sweet floral notes reappear on the finish, adding lift and perfume. In 2009, the Melbury is dazzling. It is also one of the more delicate wines in the lineup Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029.  I have been excited about the BOND 2009s since I first tasted them 18 months ago. My enthusiasm for those wines is surpassed only by the 2010s. The 2009s are sexy, radiant and impeccably polished, while the 2010s are more inward, structured and brooding in style. It is impossible not to compare BOND to Bill Harlan’s Harlan Estate. Although I am told the approach to farming and picking is identical in all the vineyards both estates look after, my sense is that the BOND wines are a little more vibrant than Harlan Estate, which tends to occupy a spot a little further out on the ripeness spectrum. It’s hard to know what more there is to say about BOND. These are simply some of the most utterly magnificent wines I have ever tasted, and a true testament that terroir not only exists in Napa Valley, but that these are some of the most privileged sites for making wine anywhere in the world. In my opinion, in top vintages, the St. Eden, which emerges from the red soils of Oakville, and the Vecina, from Vine Hill Ranch, are two of the greatest wines in Napa Valley.

The Melbury draws the taster in with its seductive aromatics and sublime balance. What a gorgeous wine the 2012 has become.

Robert Parker 95P
From a 7-acre hillside vineyard overlooking Lake Hennessey, the 2012 Melbury, like its siblings, is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 100% new oak for a minimum of 24 to 28 months, then bottled unfiltered. The wine displays beautiful blackberry fruit, some charcoal, loamy soil undertones, forest notes, lots of spice, a full-bodied, multi-dimensional mouthfeel, and a super finish of 45+ seconds. Even in a vintage like 2012, this wine ideally needs 3-5 years of bottle age and should keep for 30+ years.

Fabulously intense and full-bodied, with majestic flavor intensity, a skyscraper-like mouthfeel, incredible purity and length, and supple tannins, this magnificent wine comes closest to the great Harlan Estate itself. Drink it over the next 35 years.

Even more impressive is the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon, a richer, fuller wine with the same structural profile as the 2009, but with deeper, more concentrated black currant, licorice, incense and floral characteristics. Deep, pure, textured and multidimensional, this opaque purple-colored 2010 is sensational. Drink it over the next 20 years. Both wines are multi-AVAs from five vineyards spread across Napa Valley.

At Buccella, we’re especially interested in origins. Our own story began over a beautiful bottle of 1990 Gaja. It was our first date. When we met, we were two individuals with distinct dreams, but we soon found our shared passion for wine would unite our paths to create Buccella. We savor wine for its ability to bring people together, initiate new relationships, and celebrate life’s most momentous occasions. A well-crafted wine not only creates memories, it nourishes the true enjoyment of life. For these reasons, we have pursued our shared dream of making the best wine we can.Our dream has not been without obstacles. But they have inspired us to work tirelessly, handcrafting wines that reflect our shared commitment to creating memories and enhancing life’s celebrations. It is a privilege to create wine that is an important ingredient in shaping your stories, your enjoyment of life. What a glorious statement for Cabernet Sauvignon, Buccella’s 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine has an opaque purple color, a beautiful nose of forest floor, white flowers, blueberry and black raspberry, along with a telltale cassis and subtle background oak. Full-bodied, rich and multi-dimensional, this is fabulous 2012 that’s just coming into its own. Look for this wine to drink well young, as it already is, and evolve for 20-25 years.

The third cuvée, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Papa’s Knoll has a seamless integration of tannin, acidity, alcohol and wood. Beautiful blueberry and blackberry fruit, a dense opaque purple color, wonderful purity, a savory, broad, multilayered mouthfeel make for a stunner and another great value from Buehler Vineyards. This wine should drink well for 15-20 years.

Galloni 93P
The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Papa's Knoll is the richest and darkest of these three wines. Black cherry, plum, spice and new leather abound. Rich, ample and generous, with soft contours and plenty of early appeal for the year, the Papa's Knoll offers tremendous depth, finishing with substantial weight and substance married to a real sense of explosive energy.

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate wraps around the palate with gorgeous depth. Black cherry jam, plum, hard candy, wild flowers, cloves and new leather are nicely delineated in the glass. The 2013 is not particularly complex, but it is tasty, and should drink well for another decade or so.

Tastingnote
The grapes we choose for our 2013 Buehler Vineyards Napa Valley Zinfandel are a mix of those off our estate vineyards and grapes from other select Napa Valley high quality, low-yielding vineyards. Dry-farmed for over 26 years, our 4.5 acre estate block consists of mature forty year- old vines which typically give us around 2.5 tons/acre of beautiful hillside Zinfandel fruit. Interspersed among the head-trained vines are a handful of Petite Sirah vines representing perhaps 5% of the total vines in this block.

The 2013 vintage will be fondly remembered for its classic proportions and near perfect ripening season that began with ideal flowering and fruit set and then was coaxed to ripeness by a steady stream of moderate sun drenched days and cool foggy nights. Like 2012, the late light rains of the 2013 harvest season posed no threat to our crop since it was safely tucked away in the winery once they arrived.

Our Zinfandel was aged for 12 months in a combination of French and American oak barrels, 20% of which were new. At this level of “new wood”, the up-front endearing quality of Zinfandel can assert itself. Aromas of a briar patch on a hot summer day carry over to the palate and are carried in a mouth-filling, deeply layered, juicy package. The wine was crafted for immediate enjoyment but for those who enjoy a more complex wine displaying some bottle-aged character, aging for another two to three years is a good option.

They appear to be immune to some of winedom’s less than intelligent trends and fads that we see from time to time, and the result is a spectacular 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon 40th Anniversary offering. Its dense purple/black color is followed by copious quantities of crème de cassis and blackberry fruit, silky tannins, a voluptuous texture and stunning purity as well as length. This full-bodied effort is a fabulous example of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon as well as a tribute to this amazing family. It is so good now, why wait? However, I’m sure that like most vintages of Caymus, it will last for 20-25 years. Amazing!

Caymus Vineyards produces two Cabernets Sauvignons – a “Napa Valley” and the venerable “Special Selection”. Both Cabernet bottlings have aromas and flavors which can only be achieved through “hang time” – a technique which chances the loss of crop if early winter sets in. Leaving the fruit to “hang” on the vine unusually long develops suppleness, increases color, and matures the tannins of the grapes. The wines are abundant in textural tannins yet soft as velvet. Crop thinning, allowing measured sunlight to reach the vine’s fruit zone, and waiting for increased ripeness are all part of our viticultural practices. Caymus Cabernets offer a wide array of aromas and flavors including cocoa, cassis and vanilla.

Caymus Special Selection is the flagship wine of the Wagner family and is comprised of the very best barrels of the vintage. This wine is not produced in difficult years. Caymus Napa Valley is more representative of a standard Cabernet of Napa Valley, as it is a bit less precocious than the Special Selection, but still delivers big. Caymus prides itself on producing wines that are as approachable in youth as well at maturity. Both the “Napa Valley” and “Special Selection” Cabernets are produced under the winemaking hand of Chuck Wagner.

This is irresistible, especially for a Cabernet Sauvignon coming in at 14.9% natural alcohol. Drink it over the next decade or more.

Wine maker notes
We created this wine to be low in tartness yet abundant in tannins, providing impressions of friendly chock richness. The palate enters rich with sweet, ripe tannins, expanding to a greater breadth of refined textures. The flavor profile includes dark chocolate, sweet tobacco, mocha, leather, brown spice, cedar, vanilla and sweet licorice. The primary goodness of this wine is the presence of balance, with a supple texture, approachable grip and a fruit of the earth essence.

For five generations, my family has lived and loved the Napa Valley. Our grandfather settled here in the 1800s and from that moment forward, we’ve grown to understand there is simply no substitute for an intimate knowledge of the land that only comes by ”living” in the vineyard. Working the land with our own hands has given us insights into California winemaking that can’t be found in any book or corporate farm manual. -Chuck Wagner We are the Wagner Family of Wine: Chuck Wagner continues to direct the world-reknown Cabernet program at Caymus Vineyards in Napa Valley; Charlie is making exquisite Chardonnay at Mer Soleil in the Santa Lucia Highlands of Monterey County; Joseph is making fine Pinot Noir under the Belle Glos label in the coastal areas of California; Jenny is learning the ropes here at Caymus and ah yes, our longtime winemaker for Conundrum, Jon Bolta, continues his craft of making that puzzling, white wine blend.

The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection has a dense blackish/purple color and creamy, sweet crème de cassis fruit, blackberries, a touch of graphite and vanilla, This exuberant, boisterous, in-your-face style of Cabernet Sauvignon is clearly a fruit bomb, so be warned. Full-bodied and opulent with stunning concentration and richness, the wine has no hard edges and is much in the Caymus style of terrific fruit intensity (most of it black and blue), voluptuous texture, and a stunning finish with plenty of glycerin, wood and spice. The alcohol on the label is listed at 14.8%, which seems about accurate. I have Caymus Special Selection in my cellar back to some of the historic wines made by Chuck Wagner’s father in the early 1970s, and while the style’s gotten more precocious and consumer-friendly, these wines, even the more latter-day styles, have a tendency to age beautifully. This can be drunk now, or cellared for 20+ years.

I believe that 2012 may have been a new high water mark for Napa and California, with an ideal season from start to finish. Those conditions also contributed in setting apart this year’s Special Selection. The result is a wine that bears a more significant contrast from our more widely available Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Over the decades, the Napa landscape has changed as much as the essence of our wines. Napa has become a most beautiful agricultural valley, a manicured garden 30 miles in length, and its Cabernet is one of the world’s most revered wines. Even at Caymus, our approach to producing our top wine has evolved considerably. From the days of me by my Father’s side punching down fermenters with the simple goal of making a good wine that would sell, to today using some of those same techniques with the goal to make a top wine of our Valley. By luck I grew up in the Rutherford farmland with grapes and prunes surrounding our farmhouse. What is Caymus Special Selection? It is simply a blend of the very best lots of wines that we make in a given year. We achieve this by blind tasting wines in December, just at the end of fermentation. Taking into consideration tannins, color, fruit, concentration and flavor we blend and barrel age separately what we think demonstrates the Caymus elegance and what will be bottled as our best wine of the vintage, Special Selection. We do not think lightly of shifting our style of winemaking, but every so often, after much consternation, we do make some slight changes. The Caymus 2012 Special Selection marks such a time. This vintage gave us the opportunity to make wine with added complexity from additional French oak barrel aging (26 months) prior to bottling. Certain lots came through fermentation packing a concentration of the varying Valley soil attributes. In addition to the longer barrel time overall, we placed one-third of the wine in new oak barrels for three weeks, creating an impressive wood component. In the production of the 2012 Special Selection, higher tannin is the single largest departure from the past. The wine is slightly less fruit-driven, with fine textural richness. It has its own presence that we are extremely proud of.

TASTING NOTES
A deep, dark red, this Special Selection features a nearly assertive and alluring aroma of sweet humidor tobacco. The nose is the result of lovely French oak and ripe, high-quality Cabernet, with a singular quality that awakens the senses and demands their attention. The initial impression on the palate is a fine and abundant textural feel ─ sweet and tacky at the tip of the tongue, then broadening and expanding again and again. This textural richness is layered by the plaque and tack of emulsified Cabernet skins plus a tremendously impressive wood component. This bottling is rich, profound on the palate, with immense fruit quality and the Caymus trademark suppleness.

Although Caymus Vineyards is best known for Cabernet Sauvignon, the Wagner family also produces a small amount of Zinfandel, which was a favorite of Caymus' Charlie Wagner. In many ways, Zinfandel is a quintessential California wine. It was one of the early varieties to be planted in Northern California by immigrants from Europe. Limited production.

Another black/purple wine is the Cliff Lede 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard. Flirting with perfection, this wine boasts blueberry and blackberry notes, spring flowers a hint of charcoal and subtle toast, a full-bodied mouthfeel and stunning concentration. It’s the hallmark of purity and the multi-dimensional texture and length that make for a profound Cabernet Sauvignon that’s accessible. It promises to hit its peak in 8-10 years and last 30 or more.

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Poetry reveals a rather inky, bluish/purple color. A blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc and the rest Merlot and Petit Verdot, this wine is super-youthful and still tastes somewhat like a barrel sample. It’s bursting with upside potential. Inky purple to the rim, with notes of crème de cassis, black cherry liqueur, licorice, spice and a touch of vanilla, this is a full-bodied, concentrated and an utterly profound wine that may represent the greatest wine that Cliff Lede has made to date.

Vineyards
Fruit was sourced from our Twin Peaks Vineyard in the Stags Leap District and a few of our valued growers within Napa Valley. Yields are maintained at sparse levels, with a focus on canopy management and vine balance. The wine is composed of small batches from a variety of blocks, representing a diverse range of carefully selected rootstocks and clones, to assemble a blend with depth and complexity.

Winemaking
The grapes were picked in the darkness of the early morning hours, and immediately subjected to rigorous selection by our three-tiered hand sorting process. The whole berries were gently gravity-delivered to tank by our crane system, minimizing disruption of berry integrity. Cold soaks lasted approximately five days, and fermentations were managed via a combination of délestage, pumpovers, and punchdowns. Extended maceration ranging from three to four weeks fine-tuned our tannin profiles, allowing us to build mouth feel and wine complexity. The wine was aged in French oak for eighteen months.

Winemaker Notes
Aromas of fresh crushed raspberries, kirsch, and black plum are highlighted with hints of Tahitian vanilla, Belgian chocolate, and toasty pain grillé. The candied violet and black cherry flavors dance on the palate revealing ripe, supple tannins complemented by gravelly minerality and a long luscious finish.

The 2015 Sauvignon Blanc is loaded with aromas of Meyer lemon and candle wax atop layers of honeysuckle, ginger, and tangerine. Spring blossoms of wisteria, lupin, and California buckeye abound in the upper register of the seductive perfume. The full-bodied, coating mouthfeel expands out on the palate with a rich crème brûlée like texture as unctuous notes of bosc pear, orange marmalade, and lavender honey coalesce along the long, satisfying finish.

The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Songbook is seriously deep, dark and beautiful. Espresso, pine, menthol licorice and smoke jump from the glass in this brooding beauty. The purity and pedigree of the fruit, sourced from David Abreu, comes through in spades. The Songbook is without question the most backward of these 2010s from Cliff Lede. Layers of dark blue and black fruit supported by huge tannins leave a lasting impression on the intense finish. Songbook is 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, all off of David Abreu’s Madrona Ranch and Thorevilos properties. The relatively high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in this vintage works beautifully.

The wine that probably gets ignored, but shouldn’t be, is their small production of 350-400 cases of Syrah from their estate vineyard. The 2012 IX Syrah Estate blew me away, and I’ve said many times that it always tastes as if it’s co-fermented with Viognier, but it is always 100% Syrah. It has a honeysuckle, flowery, almost white/peachy component in the blackberry and meaty aromatics that always throw me off. The wine is aged in small oak, but the oak is concealed by the lavish amount of fruit, glycerin and extract. This is a super-intense, massive, yet elegant and complex Syrah that should drink well for 10-15 years.

The 2005 Dominus continues to strut its stuff, tasting like a Napa hybrid blend of a St.-Emilion and Pomerol. Its dark ruby/purple-tinged color is followed by notions of cedarwood, spice box, roasted herbs, sweet black cherry and cassis fruit, licorice, and truffles. Full-bodied with excellent fruit intensity, complex aromatics, supple tannins, and a long finish, this 7,000-case blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot should drink well for two decades or more.

Christian Moueix, Dominus' owner, has purchased the 35-acre Swanson Vineyard, which is situated between the well-known California bistros, Brix and Mustard's. I suspect that will result in a third label from Dominus. At present, the production from these large holdings in Yountville is approximately 10,000-12,000 cases, with the second wine, Napanook, representing 3,500-4,000 cases, depending on the vintage. It is ironic that Christian Moueix, the great Merlot specialist at his flagship chateaux in Pomerol, especially Petrus, prefers the other Bordeaux varietals at his Napa property. Interestingly, when I visit Dominus, they always open a fresh bottle and serve it alongside a bottle that has been decanted for 24 hours. On each occasion, the more complex, open wine is the one that has had 24 hours of aeration, something buyers of this wine should take into consideration. These are the two strongest back to back vintages for Dominus since 1990-1991 and 2001-2002.

The 2008 Dominus may eclipse the 2007, but it may just be a matter of style. The 2007 Dominus, the quintessential model of haute couture, is pure elegance exhibiting a seamless integration of wood, tannin, alcohol and acidity as well as a complex bouquet of cedar, new saddle leather, sweet kirsch, black currant and plum fruit and a notion of licorice. Both the 2007 and 2008 Dominus should drink well for 25-30 years.

This estate, owned by Christian Moueix, includes the famed Napanook Vineyard that was the base of so many of the historic Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignons of the 1950s and 1960s. Interestingly, they have completely eliminated Merlot from the bottling. The 2007 Dominus is a 5,400-case blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. There are 4,200 cases of the 2008 Dominus which is composed of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. Lower yields resulted in a denser, more concentrated wine. The remarkable thing about these cuvees is that they smell like a hypothetical blend of a top Napa Cabernet Sauvignon and a serious Bordeaux, possibly a cross blend of a Pomerol and Pauillac. Both wines possess silky sweet tannins, which is the big difference between Dominus post-1990 and the first seven vintages, where the tannin content was relatively high. About 40% new oak is used in their upbringing.

P.S. In a couple of years, readers should be on the look-out for a new estate wine from Christian Moueix. One mile north of the Napanook Vineyard, Moueix has purchased a 36-acre, already planted parcel known as the Schmidt Ranch. I tasted some of the 2009 barrel samples and this appears to be another promising venture with a completely different personality a more obviously Napa Valley/Cabernet Sauvignon, ripe style of wine than the more elegant, complex Dominus. I'm not sure what the name will be, but it will definitely not be called the Schmidt Ranch.

The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon is all about grace. One of the most floral, perfumed wines of the vintage, the 2011 impresses for its balance and sense of proportion. There are no hard edges or green notes in the 2011, even though the wine is smaller scaled than normal. Today, the 2011 is quite open and accessible, but I would not be surprised to see it tighten up in bottle. The bright acidity of the year lingers on the finish. Ric Forman shortened macerations by 50% and opted for gentle extractions. The 2011 also saw a little less new oak than normal.

There are few winemakers in Napa Valley who can match Ric Forman's enviable track record. My only regret is that Forman makes only one Chardonnay and one Cabernet Sauvignon, as my tastings at the estate tend to be short. At their best, these are some of the most compelling wines being made in the US today. Forman blocks the malo on his Chardonnay, a style he made famous decades ago, which results in unusually steely, vibrant wines by California standards. Forman's Cabernets are the stuff of legends and are capable of aging 30-40 years. Quite remarkably, these wines remain exceptionally well priced considering their quality.

A totally dazzling wine, Ric Forman's 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is easily one of the wines of the vintage. Today, the 2013 is dense, powerful and explosive, with fabulous energy and tons of sheer intensity. Graphite, smoke, tobacco and layers of dark-fleshed fruit all open up in the glass. This is the first vintage to incorporate a dollop of Malbec. The 2013 has just been bottled. I will not be surprised at all if it merits a higher rating at some point in the future. Even better from bottle than it was from barrel, Ric Forman's 2013 is a super-classic, old-school Napa Cabernet to treasure for the next three decades. Best of all, Forman's Cabernet is probably the single greatest value in Napa Valley Cabernet.

Ric Forman's 2014 Chardonnay is a real stunner. A bit riper than it usually is, the 2014 possesses superb richness and intensity, but tapered with the vibrant, blocked-malo style that Forman pioneered in Napa Valley. The 2014 is a wine of push and pull that engages all the senses with superb textural balance and tons of nuance. Lemon oil, orchard fruit, almonds and dried flowers open up, but above all else the 2014 is a wine of feel. The balance here is just unreal.

As is generally the case for the Grand Roche blend, it is predominately made up of all of the press wine from the Forman Vineyard lots of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot, Merlot and Malbec.  In the 2013 version there was, in addition to the press wine, a small amount of Cabernet Franc free-run added.  Because of the fact the Grande Roche is closely related to the Forman Vineyard wine, it is no wonder that in many respects, it is easily recognized as just a slightly less sophisticated example of it’s more pedigreed parent.

In the 2013 Grande Roche, like its parent - the 2013 Forman Cabernet Sauvignon, is really quite delicious.  With dark color and a wonderful balance it represents the concentration of the vintage.  Plenty of fruit exists in a very complex array made possible from an exquisite vintage and the five varieties that make up its blend.

....proprietor Jack Bittner has fashioned a brilliant effort that reminded me of a French Rhone with its meaty, peppery, berry character. Full-bodied, spicy, and impeccably well-made, this is a stunning effort.

More dense, tannic, complex and fuller-bodied that Harlan's 2011 The Maiden is the 2011 Harlan Estate. Its plum/purple color is followed by a sweet perfume of camphor, blackcurrants, lead pencil shavings, Christmas fruitcake and hints of forest floor and underbrush. Deep, round and generous with silky tannins and a forward, evolved style, this beauty should drink well for 15-18 years.

The 2011 Harlan Estate is super-expressive and textured in the glass. Dark red cherry, plum, spice and new leather open up as the wine sits in the glass. Decidedly mid-weight and gracious, the 2011 impresses for its exceptional balance and sense of proportion. Harlan Estate is capable of myriad of expressions. In 2011, the more feminine side of the property comes through. Although not a blockbuster, the 2011 is incredibly beautiful, especially considering how challenging the year was.

The 2012 Harlan Estate is reminiscent of their 2002. Probably a candidate for perfection with another 4-5 years of bottle age, the wine is inky plum/purple to the rim and offers a gorgeous nose of scorched earth, blackberry and cassis, forest floor, and a floral, lavender-like component followed by deep, opulent, majestic flavors that caress the palate with high but sweet tannin. This is relatively evolved, and supple and voluptuous for a young Harlan estate – hence the comparison with their compelling 2002. This wine can be drunk in several years and is likely another candidate for 30-50 years of cellaring.

The Maiden is made up of the lighter, softer, more evolved lots culled from the Harlan Estate wine. The Harlan Estate is virtually all Cabernet Sauvignon with a touch of Merlot and Petit Verdot, but interestingly, very little or possibly no Cabernet Franc, which is surprising in view of its neighbor Futo Estate, which is just down the hillside and does such a magnificent job with Cabernet Franc in their blends.

As a postscript, I recently tasted the first Harlan Estate wines, which were never released, as Bill Harlan wanted to set the market on fire with a truly great wine. Looking back on the 1987, 1988 and 1989, the 1987 was tired, but the other two vintages were certainly upper 80-point wines, although nowhere near the quality of his first release, the 1990, or the subsequent great wines that started with the 1991. And speaking of the 1991, I just had two bottles of it at two separate tastings from my cellar, and that wine, at age 24, is still incredibly vigorous, vibrant and majestic. So my aging curves of 30-50 years for recent great vintages are completely understandable, given the fact that the 1991 still has at least another 20 years of life left in it.

The Maiden is fashioned from barrels not deemed rich or complex enough for the Harlan Estate (a true first-growth wine). The supple, delicious, fruit-forward 2011 The Maiden exhibits lots of sweet black cherries intermixed with hints of caramel and vanillin, an attractive, medium to full-bodied texture and good opulence as well as softness. It is on a fast evolutionary track, so enjoy it now and over the next 10+ years.

The 2011 The Maiden is bright, focused and very pretty. Sweet red berries, mint, cinnamon and rose petals are all laced together in a delicate, finely-knit wine built on pure silkiness and grace. Subtlety and a total sense of finesse are the signatures. This is a gorgeous Maiden.

Joe Heitz came to the Napa Valley in 1951 and worked alongside Andre Tchelistscheff at BV. He bought his first vineyard in 1961 and the legendary Heitz Cellars was born. He introduced the concept of a vineyard designate in 1966 with the now famous "Martha's Vineyard", and pioneered numerous ideas in winemaking throughout his life. His name and Napa Cabernet go hand in hand.

Winemaker's Notes
What an exciting Cabernet packed with vibrant layers of flavor that are so expressive of this stunning vintage! Heitz Cellars 2010 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is rich and lush with a striking garnet hue. The wine is immediately captivating with its delicious aroma of crushed blackberry and notes of cassis.Deep berry flavors explode in the mouth in a delightful integration of varietal complexity. This is a big wine to linger over, impressively balanced with velvety tannins on the finish.

It’s rare to see two Cabernet Sauvignons that eclipse anything from the Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard, but I think Jenzen has done that in 2012. One hundred percent Cabernet Sauvignon, the Cloudy’s Vineyard is opaque purple and displays richness and intensity in its notes of lead pencil shavings intermixed with cedar wood, fruitcake, blackcurrant and blackberry fruit. The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Vin is stunning. Dark black cherry, plum, smoke, licorice, menthol, tobacco and new leather wrap around the palate as this majestic, breathtaking wine shows off its personality, class and pure pedigree. Powerful yet elegant, delicate yet intense, the 2010 is firing on all cylinders today. Layers of fruit build to a crescendo of pure pleasure. Readers lucky enough to own the 2010 will want to cellar this beauty for at last a few years. In the meantime, though, it will be pretty impossible to resist.

The less expensive 2010 Endre (53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc aged in both French and Hungarian oak) is very Bordeaux like. Notes of bouquet garni, red and black currants and loamy soil are present in this medium-bodied wine that seems to be a faster evolving effort than its siblings. With excellent texture as well as an elegant style, and I use that word in a positive sense, it should drink well for 10-15 years.

Kongsgaard’s Cabernet Sauvignon comes from Atlas Peak on a parcel of leased ground. The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is sensational. This looks to be great stuff, but needs another 3-4 years of cellaring to show its full potential. Layers of ripe blackcurrant fruit and again some dusty, earthy minerality are present, and the wine shows plenty of blackberry and cassis. It is full-bodied, moderately tannic, and relatively extravagant in its density and richness. This wine should be put to sleep for 3-4 years and drunk over the following 25-30 years.

One of the great wine producers in Napa Valley, John Kongsgaard first worked at Newton winery, where he had been taught well by the world guru in winemaking, Michel Rolland. When he went out on his own, he developed a strong relationship with the Hudson family and now produces fruit from specially planted clones in the Hudson Vineyard, while also maintaining his own estate on Atlas Peak in Coombsville. All of his wines are unfined, unfiltered, singular in style, and often some of the most expressive and remarkable wines in Napa Valley. Talking to John Kongsgaard is akin to talking to some medieval wizard or mystic, but it all makes sense.

Deep, inky and powerful, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is towering. Dark, bass notes abound as firm tannins wrap around a core of intense black fruit. Today, the 2013 has regal, majestic bearing that strongly suggests readers will have to be patient. The marriage of opulence and power is compelling.

Kongsgaard also makes an amazing Syrah from a clone he obviously knows a lot about, because it does remind one of a great Côte-Rôtie such as Guigal’s La Landonne. Both the 2014 and 2013 are just loaded with notes of beef blood, grilled steak, raw beef, chocolate, asphalt, truffle and black olive tapenade. The 2013 has even more body and richness, and is a dead ringer for a great Côte-Rôtie from Guigal, especially one with no Viognier in it. It is pure meat, blood and black fruits. Drink it over the next 15-20 years, although I found it irresistible when I tasted it.

Of course, it’s hard to find any, but there are usually about eight to 15 barrels of his estate Chardonnay from Coombsville called “The Judge” in honor of his father. From old Wente clones originally planted in 1975, yields are rarely in excess of one ton of fruit per acre, which no doubt accounts for its extraordinary intensity and richness. The 2013 Chardonnay The Judge is perfect, and certainly one of the greatest Chardonnays I have ever tasted. Keeping in mind that Kongsgaard is no youngster at this game (2015 was his 41st vintage making wine), his 2013 The Judge, from the white volcanic soil in Coombsville called tufa, is an amazing wine of great intensity, power, glory, elegance, texture, density and richness. The wine offers up loads of tangerine oil, caramelized citrus, honeysuckle, white peach, apricots, and wet stones. It seems to be a smorgasbord of aromas and flavors that just keep opening as the wine sits in the mouth. This is an amazing effort and one of the greatest Chardonnays ever made in California.

In a blind tasting, this wine did not fool many tasters when served blind. It was quickly identified as a California wine despite the fact that it is made in a Bordeaux-like style. The wine performed well, exhibiting a deep ruby/purple color, a lead pencil, grapy, spicy oak-scented nose, medium body, a tight, more compact texture than the Bordeaux, as well as more elevated and obvious new oak. Rich and ripe, as well as graceful, it stood out as having higher acidity than the Bordeaux. Although soft enough to be drunk, the 1990 Opus One is capable of lasting 15 or more years.

I tend to think that recent vintages of Opus One are even greater than vintages made during this era, but the 2002 is certainly one of the top wines Opus has produced during the early part of this century. It boasts a dense plum/purple hue along with a striking bouquet of graphite, toasty oak, creme de cassis and acacia flowers. Full-bodied, opulent and young, it offers accessibility as well as silky tannins. A thoroughly complete wine that is pure and rich, it tastes like a hypothetical blend of a great Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon married to a Bordeaux Pauillac. Bravo!

This blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Malbec aged 17 months in French oak is a strong effort offering creme de cassis, cedarwood, white chocolate and spice box. It possesses a Bordeaux-like personality, as one might expect since Opus One is owned by Baroness Philippe de Rothschild and the winemaking team comes primarily from Pauillac. The significant tannin in the wine provides a slight austerity, but this is a full-bodied, rich effort that marks the beginning of a period when Opus One finally began to live up to the enormous potential first announced in the late 1970s by the late Baron Philippe de Rothschild and the late Robert Mondavi.

Dark cherries, plums, smoke, licorice, new leather and menthol race across the palate in the 2013 Opus One. Firm yet also voluptuous, the 2013 has it all. The combination of fruit and structure is superb. Today, the 2013 reminds me of the 2010 when it was young, especially in its energy and pure power. The 2014 growing season was the third in a string of stunning vintages in Napa Valley. Dry, mild tempera- tures brought on early budbreak, while the persistent drought helped produce small berries with concen- trated flavors and elegant tannins. The overall length of the growing season was normal, allowing for full ripening and fresh, balanced acidity, however given the early start to the crop, it was our earliest harvest on record. Most of all, this year will go down in history for the earthquake that rocked Napa just days before harvest. Fortunately, our winery and vineyard were safe, but the greater community was deeply impacted, and the event defined the entire season.

WINEMAKING NOTES
Jayson Red Wine is a distinctive blend of Bordeaux varieties, crafted to express each vintage with intensity and richness. Fermented in stainless steel tanks to enhance the fresh fruit profile and retain its bright acidity, the wine was racked to barrels (45% new French oak) for fifteen months and bottled with minimal fining and filtration. We make this wine to be enjoyed upon release, but it will age beautifully for a decade.

TASTING NOTES
This wine leads with delicate floral aromas of violets, dried herbs, cloves and a hint of gravel, with a distinct Right Bank influence driven by the Cabernet Franc. The palate is rich and concentrated, with chewy Bing cherry, juicy ripe plum, and hints of dark chocolate and sweet orange peel. This is a fleshy, full-bodied wine with substantial tannins. Bright acidity, reminiscent of Bergamot, is a hallmark of the vintage, and balanc- es the rich fruit over a long, pebbly finish.

Pine, menthol, savory herbs, licorice, dark cherry and plum notes emerge from the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon. With time in the glass, the 2011 fleshed out beautifully while retaining a classic, mid-weight profile. My sense is that the 2011 will develop along the lines of the 1994, a wine that remains distinctly floral, savory and medium in body, with less of the explosiveness of years such as 1985 or 1997, but with tons of class and style. It is going to be interesting to find out. The 2011 was bottled just a few months ago, so I will not be surprised if it shows even better than this note suggests with time. In 2011, the fruit came in a whole month later than normal.

The 2015 Pinot Noir from Rossi-Wallace is especially fine this year. The low-yielding, ripe vintage produced an unusually racy, luscious wine. Even with all of its intensity, the 2015 retains considerable brightness and lift throughout. Expressive red stone fruit, mint, crushed flowers and rose petal overtones are nicely delineated in this fleshy, but classically mid-weight Pinot.

Ric talks about the 2015 Rossi-Wallace Pinot Noir
Due to an unusually cool period during flowering, Spring 2015, Pinot Noir experienced extreme shatter and hence a very small crop. Small is good for quality but bad for production. We had to out-source to make a commercially viable quantity. Perhaps necessity created a serendipitous eventuality. The three county selection from some exquisite vineyards has produced a truly plush and distinctive Pinot. The wine shouts "Pinot" with its' alluring strawberry, violet and raspberry fruit and is sensually warm and full in flavor. One sip begs for another! One of our best yet - 35 barrels produced.

Galloni 92
The 2014 Pinot Noir is sleek, perfumed and super-expressive, with a gorgeous sense of translucency and weightlessness in its sweet, perfumed fruit. The Rossi-Wallace Pinot emerges from fruit sourced from the Antinori family's vineyard on Atlas Peak. In the past, I have found the wine a bit weak and lacking in depth. The 2014 is the first vintage I can recall with real substance, not to mention pedigree. This is a superb showing, especially considering the price.

The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate exhibits a dark purple color along with a pungent, earthy nose displaying hints of new saddle leather, roasted meats, cedarwood, barbecue smoke, creme de cassis and blackberries. Full-bodied and rich with sweet tannins, great focus and delineation, and a finish that lasts 50 seconds, this killer wine should age effortlessly for 25-30 years. This Conn Valley winery continues to impress with their full throttle, ageworthy Cabernet Sauvignons made with the consulting assistance of Philippe Melka. The vineyards are all dry-farmed hillside sites and as Melka has told me many times, the biggest issue with the Seavey vineyards is trying to control the formidable tannins that emerge in nearly every vintage. 2010 is certainly their strongest vintage since 2008 and 2007.

The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Caravina is fabulous. Smoke, incense and dark red berries and smoke are some of the many nuances that take shape in the glass. This is an unusually complex second wine loaded with class and personality. I can’t think of too many wines that deliver this much sheer character for the money. Firm tannins frame the muscular finish. Ideally the 2010 needs another few years to settle down, but it is pretty special, even today. The Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five takes its name from the fact that John and Doug Shafer, as father and son, have worked together for a generation and a half – hence the name. This wine comes from their Stags Leap property and is a beauty. The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five is a stunner made from 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest other varietals. It is aged in 100% new oak, but you would never tell that given its richness of blackcurrant fruit, classic flowers and unsmoked cigar tobacco. The wine needs 3-4 years, as most 2013s do, and should be a 30-year wine. It is a beautiful baby, but bottle age will definitely unleash more subtleties and richness. This is a full-bodied classic that is superb.

There are very few wineries in California where you can say that the original wine owners and winemaking staff are totally intact and have been, in this case, since 1978. The estate was founded by John Shafer and run with great precision by himself and more recently by his son Doug and Elias Fernandez. The team has been working together for 38 years since the first vintage in 1978. Six years earlier in 1972, John Shafer bought the property and established the vineyard in the hillsides of Stags Leap. They produce about 30,000 cases of wine – all of it noteworthy. Their Cabernet Sauvignon is true first-growth quality and their Rhône Ranger wine made from Syrah and Petite Sirah, called Relentless, is about as profound as you can get from those

The 2013 Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch looks like one of their all-time greats, and to date they’ve all been very impressive wines. The crisp tangerine, honeyed citrus, pear and white peach notes are prominent in this beautifully fruited medium to full-bodied Chardonnay that shows additional orange marmalade notes in the mouth. It’s textured, crisp acid, from having not gone though malolactic, gives it focus and zest, and the overall impression is one of brilliant richness subtly touched by smoke, but letting the fruit dominate.Year in year out, this is one of the superstar wineries, not only in Napa Valley and all of California, but in the entire world. It’s the product of visionary John Shafer, who started in 1978 after a successful corporate career. Today, this is a winery that does everything about as perfect as can be. They have kept their feet, heads and egos grounded, and continue to kick proverbial ass with every vintage. They made some of the very finest, possibly the Cabernet Sauvignon of the vintage in 2011, and in 2012 and 2013, they have crafted one profound wine after another. As good as it is, it’s hard to believe they produce a whopping 6,400 cases of it. John and Doug Shafer, along with Elias Fernandez, have certainly excelled at turning out gorgeous Merlots that are concentrated and fleshy as well as elegant. A big success for Shafer has been their Stags Leap One Point Five Cabernet Sauvignon. They make between 6,000-7,000 cases of this wine in any vintage. About one-third of their famous Hillside Vineyard, which represents 100% of their flagship wine Hillside Select, goes into this cuvée. I did an entire vertical of the Shafer Hillside, from 1978-2013, but I’ll include the older notes on the erobertparker.com website. What follows are notes on the last four vintages of the Hillside Select, their 2,400-case cuvée of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 32 months in 100% new French oak. Lastly, another sensational wine from the Shafer portfolio is the Relentless. This has been a terrific Rhône Ranger offering since it was first released in 1999, and it continues to be primarily a 89%-97% Syrah blend and the rest Petite Sirah. Like the Hillside Select, it’s aged 32 months in new oak prior to being bottled. One of the world’s greatest wines year in and year out is Shafer’s Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select. The 2002 was a candidate for perfection the first time I tasted it. The estate keeps this cuvee 32 months in 100% new French oak, so I had a number of chances to see it from barrel. Moreover, I purchased the wine for my own cellar and have had it at least a half dozen times since bottling, and it just gets more profound with each sip. This wine is beyond belief for how it balances its extraordinary richness, purity of personality, and the elegance and finesse of the Stags Leap District with massive cassis fruit, spring flowers, toasty oak and earth. The wine is fabulously concentrated, multidimensional and built like a skyscraper, yet nothing is out of place. The wood, alcohol, acidity and tannin are all in perfect balance. This offering is a tribute to the greatness of Napa Valley, which was recognized by men and women hundreds of years ago, and to the modern day genius of the Shafer family. This 2002 has 50 years of life ahead of it - but why wait!

I am hardly alone in having enormous respect for the Shafer family, whose father, John, started this venerable Stags Leap winery in 1978. John still has an amazingly vigorous constitution as he moves into his eighth decade of life, although his son, Doug, is now carrying the Shafer banner. Since the beginning, they have enjoyed the services of one of the world’s great winemakers, Elias Fernandez. These are the highest scores I have ever given their regular cuvees of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, which again demonstrates what extraordinary winemaking and attention to detail takes place at Shafer. Everything can be recommended, from their Red Shoulder Chardonnay to their bevy of wine made from Bordeaux varietals as well as their famed Relentless, a blend of Syrah and Petite Sirah. This winery has clearly been on the top of its game for two decades and only continues to improve. How admirable is that?

The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select, already given a 100-point score, was tasted again. It has everything one could ever want in a prodigious, world-class Cabernet Sauvignon. Notes of lead pencil shavings, crème de cassis, vanilla, unsmoked cigar tobacco, licorice and forest floor are all present in this wine that is absolutely remarkable. It’s full-bodied, seamlessly constructed, with great purity and a tremendous 50-60 second finish. This obviously will age 25-30 years, if not a lot longer. This has turned out to be a great, great vintage that seems to grow in stature in the bottle.

Year in year out, this is one of the superstar wineries, not only in Napa Valley and all of California, but in the entire world. It’s the product of visionary John Shafer, who started in 1978 after a successful corporate career. He had the foresight and visionary genius to believe in the microclimates and soils of Stags Leap of the southern Napa Valley. When his son Doug came on board with their brilliant winemaker and Mr. Everything, Elias Fernandez, things soared in quality and diversity. For starters, their Chardonnay has always been a non-malolactic Chardonnay, of which 75% is barrel-fermented and the other quarter in stainless steel. I have no idea how long these wines will last, but they’re fabulous to drink young, and certainly 20-25 years is well within reach of just about every top vintage of Relentless.

Possibly the Cabernet Sauvignon of the vintage is Shafer’s 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select. Last year I thought it was a strong effort, but it’s even better now that it’s been bottled. With an opaque black/purple color and notes of subtle burning charcoal embers, blueberry, blackberry and graphite, the wine has a certain Bordelais minerality, but then the richness of Napa kicks in. It’s full-bodied (somewhat unusual for a 2011) with lighter tannins, and no doubt the wine will be on a faster evolutionary track than vintages such as 2010, 2012 and 2013. Nevertheless, the Shafers and Elias said this was the toughest vintage they’d ever experienced. To be able to produce a compelling wine like this is a testament to their extraordinary skills and craftsmanship. This wine can be drunk now or cellared for another 15-20 years.Shafer’s Hillside Estate Vineyard consists of 54 acres all on steep, amphitheater-like, rocky outcroppings and knolls. It receives the full benefit of southeasterly sunlight, and enjoys the afternoon breezes that blow up from the San Francisco Bay channel. An unusual geographic feature, this vineyard is basically a box canyon. The top soil is virtually non-existent as the bed roots that go into the white tofu volcanic soil base rarely extend more than 18 inches before hitting bedrock. This no doubt is a significant reason for the intense flavors achieved by the Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon, and why it is able to spend 32 months in 100% new French oak without a woody taste.

Shafer also makes one of the better Merlots. The 2014 Merlot includes 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and is a beauty. Mocha and chocolaty notes intermixed with red cherry, plum and blacker fruits jump from the glass of this perfumed and fragrant style of Merlot. It is medium to full-bodied, exceptionally pure and rich and should drink beautifully over the next 10-12 years of life.

The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon is just as beautiful as it has always been. Silky, perfumed and impeccably balanced, the 2011 is all about finesse. Sweet red cherries, plums, cloves and new leather all flow through to the expressive finish. Given the wine's mid-weight structure, it is best enjoyed over the next dozen of years or so. This is one of the unqualified successes of the year. Dollops of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc round out the blend.

With the lowest percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in of any of the wines from this vertical, the 2012 final blend was 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. Production across the board in 2012 was high, and reflected in the 3,977 cases made at Spottswoode. This is a dramatic, flamboyant, modern-day version of the 2002. Dramatic blueberry, black raspberry and blackcurrant fruit, along with camphor, charcoal, white flowers and foresty notes all emerge from the impressive aromatics that soar from the glass. The intense, explosively rich, full-bodied palate is layered with beautiful purity, stunningly sweet, silky tannins and terrific presence and complexity. This is a gorgeous wine on a relatively fast evolutionary track, I suspect, but certainly it has 30 years of upside left.

Bold, intense and racy, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Lyndernhurst wraps around the palate with supple fruit, expressive aromatics and a silky, inviting finish that gives the wine so much of its immediacy and pure appeal. The style is round and succulent to the core; in other words classic 2012. Dark red stone fruits, spices, new leather and mint meld into the generous finish in this pretty Cabernet from Spottswoode.

Our Sauvignon Blanc is quintessentially Californian, with a beautiful ripeness balanced with wonderful structure and acidity. Grapes from a handful of carefully selected vineyards join our Spottswoode Estate fruit in the composition of this wine. A combination of small, stainless barrels, French oak, and concrete, egg-shaped cuves are utilized in fermentation. This technique results in a complex, rich, and vibrant wine that stands well on its own, pairs beautifully with food, and is further enhanced with a bit of cellaring. An inviting, expressive nose of white peach, tangerine peel, and guava, with orange blossoms and a wisp of gardenia, gives way to a mouth-filling and round palate of beautifully ripe pears and tangerine cream. Smooth and rich, exhibiting wonderful structure and balance. Compelling and exciting—makes us long for the warm spring and summer days that are forthcoming!
