Opulent hazelnut, brioche and apple strudel aromas on the nose with a faint whiff of chalk dust. The palate is restrained and notably taut for Krug with high acidity and tightly wound roasted nut, stone fruit and toasted croissant flavours. Fine, frisky bubbles and a long praline finish. Drink now - 2020. Tasted January 2009.

At its finest, the 1990 Vintage is superb, revealing a slightly oxidized style, but a full-bodied, rustic, rich personality with the body of a red wine, but loads of character. I cannot recommend the 1989 Vintage as three bottles tasted were all oxidized, possibly from bad storage, but who knows?

The real surprise among Krug's 1996s is the 1996 Vintage, which is drinking beautifully, even among this rarified air of single-vineyard Champagnes. The 1996 Vintage is explosive and creamy, with just the right balance of power, richness and freshness. The mousse is perhaps just a touch less refined than in the 1996 Clos du Mesnil and Clos d'Ambonnay, but it is also perfectly measured with the wine's exuberant personality. This multi-dimensional, textured Champagne is at the early part of its drinking window and promises to deliver an incredible drinking experience over the coming decades. The take-away from this flight of 1996s from Krug is simple. Although the 1996 Vintage can't possibly be described as inexpensive, it shows exceptionally well next to its much more expensive brethren and clearly delivers a similar level of quality. Readers who have the opportunity to pick up this wine should not hesitate. It is a gem. No disgorgement date provided. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2036.

My tasting this year with Olivier Krug was fascinating as I had the rare opportunity to taste all of the house's 1996's side by side, a comparison that yielded very interesting results.

The 1998 Brut Vintage is a gorgeous wine for near-term drinking, Warm, toasty notes lead to an expansive core of fruit that covers the palate. This isn't the most complex Krug Vintage, but it also won't take years or decades to offer its finest drinking. 2010-2020.

My visit to Krug earlier this year was fascinating, as I had a chance to taste a number of 2009s and reserve wines. A tank sample of the 2009 Clos du Mesnil was one of the most exciting, viscerally thrilling wines of the trip, and remained etched on my mind for several weeks. I also had a chance to glance over newly found, hand-written original records that document the exact village breakdown of all the grapes Krug purchased in each vintage going back to 1928. This year I tasted a number of fabulous wines from bottle. Unfortunately I can't include my impressions on Krug's NV Champagnes because of the house's insistence on not providing disgorgement dates for those wines. I was reminded of the importance of this information when I tasted a fabulous, utterly spellbinding bottle of the NV Rose. It was a truly beautiful Champagne, but owing to its recent disgorgement it needed at least a few years on the cork. Of course Krug gives a general indication of the disgorgement dates for their wines on the corks, but by that time, readers may have opened a bottle that needs more bottle age. Without this information it is impossible to give readers any reliable indication of when the house's NV wines might start drinking well. With a retail price over $300 a bottle, opening a bottle of Krug's Rose can be a very expensive learning experience. Krug fans will want to keep an eye out for my upcoming article on Clos du Mesnil, featuring complete notes back to the inaugural 1979.

Krug's 1998 Brut Vintage is an excellent choice for drinking today, as the classic Krug style is rich, alive and totally vivid. Honey, almonds, smoke, graphite and dried apricots are some of the many aromas and flavors found in this rich, enveloping Champagne. A wine of texture and depth, the 1998 impresses for its vinous personality and terrific balance. Lively veins of underlying acidity suggest the 1998 will drink well for many years to follow. This is one of the best bottles of the 1998 I have ever tasted. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2038. There are no new vintage wines from Krug, but is always interesting to revisit these wines as they develop so much over time. The biggest news at Krug is the addition of ID Codes to the NV wines, which gives readers the opportunity to get more information on the wines (including disgorgement dates) through Krug's website. It would be great to see more of the larger houses follow suit.

Krug's 2000 Brut Vintage is very understated and cool. It boasts gorgeous textural finesse and layers of effortless fruit. This is an especially vibrant, floral Champagne for Krug that impresses for its fine balance and sensual personality. Even better, the 2000 drinks well right out of the gate, unlike 1995 and 1996. A superb, caressing finish laced with green pears, spices, flowers and almonds leaves a lasting impression. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2030.

I tasted a wide range of wines during my visit to Krug this year, including several versions of the Grande Cuvee that have temporary proprietary names meant to distinguish each release, including the 'Equilibre' (1998 base) and 'Savoir Faire' (2001 base). The wines still don't carry disgorgement dates (and probably never) will, but this is a step forward. Yes, the corks have a code that indicates an approximate disgorgement date range, but that is of no use until a bottle is opened. Still, the proprietary name concept is clever, unique and does achieve the purpose of distinguishing each release of the Grande Cuvee. I hope Krug makes the decision to market the next release of their Grande Cuvee with a proprietary name.

Tasting Notes

At first sight a lovely bright golden colour. A very charismatic fresh nose, promise of natural intensity and elegance with strong presence of fruits, fruits of all types.

A diverse bouquet of orange aromas with some notes of liquorice and light chocolate biscuit can be enjoyed.  On the palate, astonishing, balanced and delicate with significant fresh, tropical, wild and crystallised fruits. It is a hymn to fruit: red, white and citrus fruit with notes of cassis, chocolate, candied-orange peel, cocoa beans, honey with hints of smoke and toast enhanced by a vibrant, persistent long finish.

Vintage 2002

The expression of the year 2002 as revealed by Krug: Ode to Nature. Krug 2002 is an homage to fruit. It is a charismatic Champagne which beautifully combines natural intensity, delicacy and insolent elegance.
Krug 2002 is the first Krug vintage of the Millennium. As with Krug 1988, released after 1989, Krug 2002 comes after 2003.
As with all Krug Champagnes, Krug 2002 will continue to gain with the passage of time. The House did not hesitate to create Krug 2002, naming it Ode to Nature to express the music of an extremely serene and generous year with perfect conditions for highly-expressive wines centred around fruit of all types with a beautiful structure, great intensity and elegance.

Grape Variety

Krug 2002 is a blend of selected wines of the year from many different plots, marked by its undeniably profound fruity character. It is a balanced dialogue between Pinot Noir (40%) and Chardonnay (39%) with Pinot Meunier (21%).
The elegance of Krug 2002 comes after 14 years in the cellars gaining in harmony and finesse.

Gallioni 93/100

Krug has done a terrific job with their 2003 Vintage. Warm, richly oxidative Krug signatures wrap around the palate in a textured, inviting Champagne endowed with tons of pure class, something that is especially evident on the finish, which is as sexy as it gets. In this vintage, Chef de Caves Eric Lebel bumped up the percentage of Meunier to give the wine as much freshness as possible. One of the challenges with Krug Vintages is that the wines are never ready to drink when they are released, something that has been true for as long as I can remember. That won't be an issue with the 2003, which is absolutely gorgeous today. I tasted the 2003 twice about a month apart. Those tastings suggest the 2003 won't be a long-lived Champagne by the standards of Krug, one of Champagne's most historic, iconic houses. I would choose to drink the 2003 ahead of any other Krug vintage back to the late 1980s. The 2003 is 46% Pinot Noir, 29% Chardonnay and 25% Pinot Meunier.

The 1995 Brut Blanc de Noirs Clos d’Ambonnay is simply profound from the very first sip. All of the classic Krug elements are there; the signature bouquet, the finesse of the best Clos du Mesnils, but with the broader shoulders of Pinot from Ambonnay. The fruit is intricately layered in sublime, graceful notes of mineral-infused, perfumed berries that linger on the eternal finish. Totally rich and seductive, the 1995 Clos d’Ambonnay is a wine that will stimulate the intellectual and hedonistic senses to the maximum. In a word, it is divine. The 1995 Clos d’Ambonnay is hard to resist today, but it should continue to develop positively in bottle for a number of years. The only problem is the $3,500 price tag, which means the wine will only be enjoyed by an elite few. No disgorgement date provided.

Medium straw in colour, the nose is profoundly scented of apple tart, lightly toasted hazelnuts, orange blossom, brioche, and granola with subtle nuances of crushed stones, musk and honeycomb. The palate is incredibly concentrated, crisp and taut with great richness matched by very fine bubbles and a very long, steely finish. There’s definitely a lot more to come from this wine but it’s looking very fine now.

The 1989 Clos du Mesnil, from a warmer year, makes for a fascinating contrast to the cool inward 1988. It is a bigger, fatter wine that caresses the palate with layers of expansive, generous fruit. Sweet scents of caramel, hazelnuts and honey add complexity to the fruit. Despite its burnished, textured fruit, the 1989 remains light on its feet and superbly well-balanced but it is at, or close to, peak. To put things in perspective, the 1989 was harvested at the beginning of September - the 7th and 8th to be exact - while the 1988 was harvested between September 30th and October 2nd.

The 1998 Brut Blanc de Blancs Clos du Mesnil has come together beautifully since I tasted it last year. This is a remarkably taut, focused bottle of the 1998 with great energy and minerality in its precise, crystalline fruit. The 2000 Brut Blanc de Blancs Clos du Mesnil is rich, deep, textured and wonderfully complete. The seductiveness of the 2000 vintage comes through beautifully, but the Mesnil has extra dimensions of depth that aren't found in the Vintage. Smoke, ash, graphite, pastry and lemon are some of the nuances that unfold in this supremely gracious, refined Clos du Mesnil. The creation is 100% Chardonnay grapes from the Clos du Mesnil, a solitary vineyard covering only 1.85 hectares settling inside of the town of Mesnil-sur-Oger in the prestigious Côte des Blancs. Encased by a stone divider since 1698, the Clos du Mesnil is honored with a perfect microclimate, being arranged on a tender southeast-confronting slant and protected from the climate by its divider and the encompassing houses.

At the point when Johann-Joseph Krug established the Krug champagne house in 1843, his fantasy was to give his name to nothing not exactly an excellent champagne-a champagne with a taste all its own. To accomplish this, he set himself a couple rules, among which, above all else: never bargain on quality.Six eras later, he would affirm of his descendents' reliable duty to magnificence. Krug is one of not very many champagnes houses that deliver just premium mixes. This dedication to just the best quality and Krug's novel mastery in champagne-production clarify its overall notoriety. The wines are produced using painstakingly chosen Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier grapes. Krug is a gatekeeper of Champagne custom in as yet aging its wines in little oak barrels, which gives them a remarkable artfulness.Another mark of the Krug style, they are made to develop for no less than 6 to 8 years, the prize of which is an unmistakable many-sided quality and the capacity to age smoothly. Every year, the individuals from the Krug family mix the distinctive wines that 6 or after 8 years will keep up the high caliber and style of their antecedents. Genuinely uncommon years are sanctified vintage mixes. With techniques that ensure the generation and mixing of just remarkable champagne, its own particular 19-hectares vineyard, the nature of the 56 hectare vineyards the house purchases its valuable grapes from and its stock worth 7 years of creation, no big surprise Krug is the reference for premium champagnes.Krug is an experience, an affair, a disclosure – and a gathering of six unprecedented champagnes: Krug Grande Cuvee, Krug Rose, Krug Vintage, Krug Collection, Krug Clos du Mesnil and Krug Clos d'Ambonnay.Taking after the arrival of Krug Clos du Mesnil—the main special case to Krug's mixing rules, since it was produced using a solitary grape assortment, a solitary year and a solitary incredible vineyard—Henri and Rémi Krug set out on a mission for a moment fortune, a vineyard with the possibility to one day express the quintessential identity of another terroir treasured by Krug. They at long last discovered their gem in the town of Ambonnay, whose rich and refined Pinot Noir grapes have designed the Krug style for eras.Arranged at the edge of the town on the southeast incline of the Montagne de Reims, Clos d'Ambonnay is a small 11.5-section of land (0.6850 hectares) divider encased package, scarcely a third the span of Clos du Mesnil.

The 1981 Collection (Magnum) has begun to slowly enter a plateau of maturity marked by slightly oxidative, tertiary notes that give the wine its burnished, resonant personality. Open-knit and creamy on the palate, the 1981 is an ideal wine for current drinking, as it is not likely to improve much from here. Stone fruit, vanilla, hazelnut, truffle, orange peel brioche and dried flowers are some of the many notes that grace the exquisite finish. This is a tremendous showing.

Tasted from magnum, the 1985 Krug Collection is a poignant reminder of just how well Champagne ages in the big bottle. Extraordinarily complex and yet so subtle, the 1985 is utterly captivating. A slight hint of Burgundian reduction adds aromatic nuance and intrigue as this stellar, silky Champagne shows off its pure pedigree. The 1985 is at a glorious peak of expression, but has more than enough freshness to drink well for another 10-15 years, perhaps more. What a wine.

On the palate, the 1990 is creamy, vivid and super-expressive, but what is most intriguing is how fresh the Collection is relative to Vintage Champagne, which has always been a heavier, more oxidative wine. Readers who can find the 1990 should not hesitate, as it is stellar.

Our last wine was the 2007 version of the Grande Cuvee. It was an intensely mineral, smoky Grande Cuvee, with generous floral notes, peaches and apricots. This seductive Grande Cuvee offered outstanding depth and a long, finessed finish. The Grande Cuvee (2007 base) includes roughly 33% reserve wines spanning six different vintages. On this day the Grande Cuvee was especially beautiful and captured the best of the Krug style.
