From a mixture of sand, gravel, and clay soils, this unheralded terroir produces wines well-above its pedigree thanks to the extraordinary efforts of proprietors Chantal and Gerard Perse. The wines are given a 4- to 5-week maceration in both stainless steel and oak, and are aged sur-lie in new oak. The dark ruby/purple-colored 2003 offers up notes of smoky meats, melted licorice, jammy black cherries, spice box, earth, and cedar. This plump, fleshy, sexy, unfined, unfiltered wine represents a classic blend of 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Yields were 32 hectoliters per hectare, and the alcohol is 13.5%.

This exuberant, flamboyant, modern-styled St.-Emilion from Gerard and Chantal Perse is plump, succulent and irresistible in 2009. Yields were a low 28 hectoliters per hectare, and the blend was a classic combination of 70% Merlot and the rest primarily Cabernet Franc and a tiny dollop of Cabernet Sauvignon. The alcohol of 14.2% is typical for a Monbousquet. Copious notes of toasty oak, vanillin, jammy black and red fruits intermixed with notions of wood fire barbecue, roasted espresso and chocolate jump from the glass of this fleshy, exotic, impressively endowed, full-bodied, silky smooth, opulent 2009. It should drink well for 15+ years.

Monbousquet 2009.... * * * * * i Berlingske af Søren Frank. Næsten sort bordeaux i moderne stil med meget mørk tæt, moden frugt: sveske, vanilje og kafferistet luksusfad. Kødfuld, saftig, rund og koncentreret med lang eftersmag. Drikker godt nu, men har helt sikkert et sundt liv for sig.
