Calera Wine Company Central Coast Chardonnay 2014 0,75
The Calera 2014 Chardonnay (Central Coast) is a gorgeous entry-level offering. Orange blossom, honey, chamomile and wild flowers are all pushed forward, but it is the wine's textural finesse - especially at this level - that makes it one of the very best values readers will find anywhere in the world.
Calera Wine Company Central Coast Pinot Noir 2014 0,75
Robert Parker 92P
Readers looking for a classic, incredibly well made Pinot Noir to buy by the case should look no further than Josh's 2014 Pinot Noir from the Central Coast AVA. Supple, sexy, seamless and elegant, with classic Calera notes of raspberries, mulled cherries, spice and dried soil, it has no hard edges, a core of sweet fruit and a beautiful finish that keeps you coming back to the glass. I'm sure it will keep for 4-5 years (probably longer), but there's no need to delay gratification. Don't miss this fabulous effort and bravo to the Calera team for delivering this level of quality at the price.
The 2014 Pinot Noir (Central Coast) is both impeccable and absolutely delicious. Sweet, floral and open-knit, the Central Coast is also a fabulous introduction to the Calera house style. Beautifully perfumed and gracious, the 2014 offers striking aromatics and plenty of bright fruit to match its mid-weight, chiseled personality.
Calera Wine Company Jensen Vineyard Pinot Noir 2012 0,75
Robert Parker 96P
A thrilling Pinot Noir that comes from a 13.8-acre vineyard planted in 1975 on mostly on limestone, at an elevation of 2,200 feet, the 2012 Pinot Noir Jensen Vineyard was harvested September 24 to October 21 and was aged 16 months in 30% new French oak. It offers a dark ruby color to go with a big, sweet nose of cranberry, wild strawberries, crushed flowers, forest floor and spice. Full-bodied, layered and elegant, with a supple, rounded and sexy texture, it packs plenty of fruit, yet is graceful, beautifully balanced and seamless. It's hard to resist now, yet should cruise for a decade in the cellar.
A racy, voluptuous wine, the 2012 Pinot Noir Jensen Vineyard shows the radiance of the vintage. Sweet red cherries, kirsch, mint, wild flowers and plums flesh out in an open-knit, intense wine built on texture. The 2012 remains quite primary. It can be enjoyed today, but will be even better in another few years, once the aromatics develop more fully and some of the baby fat drops off.
Calera Wine Company Jensen Vineyard Pinot Noir 2013 0,75
The Pinot Noir Jensen Vineyard is one of the most overt and powerful wines in the range. The stress of the drought comes through in a wine with real sense of push and pull tension. Ample, rich and also structured, the Jensen is another wine that needs at least a few more years in bottle. The flavors are especially dark and intense this year, while the huge, resonant finish adds to the wine's considerable appeal.
Calera Wine Company Mills Vineyard Pinot Noir 2012 0,75
Robert Parker 96P
The 2012 Pinot Noir Mills Vineyard comes from 26-year-old own-rooted vines and was harvest September 20 to October 17. Aged 18 months in 30% new French oak, its semi-opaque ruby color is followed by sensational notes of ripe currants and darker fruits, scorched earth, smoked meats, licorice and chalky minerality. Big, rich, full-bodied and layered, with a huge core of fruit that never seems over the top or heavy, this elegant, profound Pinot Noir can be enjoyed anytime over the coming decade or more.
Calera Wine Company Mills Vineyard Pinot Noir 2013 0,75
Calera's 2013 Pinot Noir Mills Vineyard boasts notable intensity, with a sense of linear structure that differentiates it in the lineup. The tannins need time to soften, so readers will have to be patient. Hints of sweet red cherry, hard candy, mint, herbs, wild flowers and rose petals give the Mills its signature inner sweetness as the flavors continue to brighten up as the wine sits in the glass. White pepper, blood orange and pomegranate add the closing layers of nuance.
Calera Wine Company Mt. Harlan Chardonnay 2014 0,75
Robert Parker 95P
Coming from accountant-crushing yields of 0.54 tons per acre, Calera's 2014 Chardonnay Mt Harlan was harvested near the middle of September and spent 13 months in 30% new French oak. This killer effort offers an exotic, perfumed bouquet of white peach, orange blossom, buttered citrus and brioche, with tons of chalky minerality emerging with more time in the glass. Rich, full-bodied, yet graceful, light on its feet and impeccably balanced, it's another great vintage for this cuvee to enjoy over the coming 5-7 years.
The 2014 Chardonnay Mt. Harlan is fabulous. Lemon peel, white flowers, tangerine notes flesh out in a texturally brilliant wine endowed with tremendous depth and nuance. There is real sense of phenolic intensity that gives the wine its structure. Above all else though, the Mt. Harlan Chardonnay speaks to finesse. Scents of apricot, jasmine and sweet spice add to the wine's polish and absolute class.
Calera Wine Company Pinot Noir De Villiers Vineyard 2013 0,75
The 2013 Pinot Noir de Villiers Vineyard is intense, pure and brilliant. Dark red cherry, blood orange, lavender, mint, star anise and wild flowers give the de Villiers an exotic edge in this vintage. Plush and deep on the palate, the 2013 is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine. Sweet floral and red-fleshed fruits add freshness on the finish. Today, the De Villiers is sublime, but it also needs time to fully come together.
Calera Wine Company Reed Vineyard Pinot Noir 2012 0,75
The most weightless and ethereal wine in this lineup, the 2012 Pinot Noir Reed Vineyard speaks above all else to finesse. Rose petal, sweet red berries, orange peel, mint and spices gradually open up in a feminine Pinot long on class. Deceptively medium in body, the 2012 is likely to flesh out a bit more in bottle, although I imagine it will always remain classically restrained in style.
Calera’s Mt. Harlan Vineyards are located in the Gavilan Mountains 25 miles east of the Monterey Bay. The site was chosen for its limestone soils and ideal climate. At an average elevation of 2,200 feet it is among the highest and coolest vineyard sites in California.
Reed Vineyard is such a distinctive site at Calera; the north facing slope makes wines slightly tawny in color and fascinatingly earthy, gamey, floral, brambly and spicy in the bouquet. It’s a very perfumed woodsy wine with cola, dried chili, plum, cassis and rose petal on the palate. The texture is alluring; delicate yet strong like a ballerina.
Vintage and Winemaking
2012 was one of those ideal growing seasons. The spring temperatures were warm and sunny, and summer temperatures were moderate with clear blue skies. The crop levels were very balanced and allowed us to hang the fruit until the magical time of ripeness. Reed Vineyard was harvested in two passes on October 20th and October 23rd.
Each day’s picking became a separate lot up until shortly before bottling. Each lot was pressed 14 days after harvest, racked by gravity to French oak barrels, then aged without racking in those barrels, 30% new, for eighteen months. The lots were then combined and the resultant wine was bottled without filtration, as always.
Calera Wine Company Reed Vineyard Pinot Noir 2013 0,75
The 2013 Pinot Noir Reed Vineyard is one of the most unique wines in this range. Its powerful, incisive, savory personality is quite distinctive, to say the least. Intense chalk notes meld into blood orange, mint, cranberry and white pepper. Today, the Reed is not as outwardly charming as some of the other wines. The acidity is high and the searing tannins need at least a few years to soften. There is no shortage of intrigue, that is for sure.
Calera Wine Company Ryan Vineyard Pinot Noir 2013 0,75
A big, powerful wine, the 2013 Pinot Noir Ryan Vineyard packs a serious punch. Dark, bold flavors abound, the result of a drought year that produced tiny berries. Readers will have to be patient, as the Ryan is likely to require quite a bit of time to come around. Even at this early stage, though, it is super-impressive. The 100% whole clusters are nearly buried by the sheer intensity of the fruit. Today, the Ryan is the most tannic, backward and brooding of these Pinots.
Calera Wine Company Selleck Vineyard Pinot Noir 2013 0,75
A wild, exotic wine, Calera's 2013 Pinot Noir Selleck Vineyard is spectacularly rich, flamboyant and intense. Beams of tannin and phenolics give the wine its structural backbone and more than enough structure to handle the intense, super-ripe fruit. Today, the 2013 is very, very young. I can't wait to see how it ages.
