As one would suspect from the vintage style, the 2012 The Matriarch Proprietary Red Blend is one of the strongest efforts to date for this cuvée. The flamboyant, exuberant nature of the vintage serves this wine well, since it comes from the softer lots. This wine can be drunk now or cellared for another 15 or more years. Beautiful fruit such as cassis and blackberry are interwoven with forest floor, charcoal and barbecue smoke, all followed by an elegant, expansive and savory wine with very ripe tannin, adequate acidity, and a long finish. The color is a dense plum/purple and the wine delicious already, as well as complex, but capable of easily lasting 15+ years.

These exceptionally impressive wines from Bill Harlan are all majestic in 2012. There are between 500 and 600 cases of each of these essentially single vineyard wines from five separate micro-climates in Napa Valley, with the exception of the Matriarch, which comes from the barrels and lots culled from the different single vineyards that were considered slightly more forward and less profound than the individual wines. All of them have great singularity and are made with absolutely no compromises. In the great vintages, such as 2012 and no doubt 2013, these wines clearly have 25-35+ years of aging potential. I wouldn’t be surprised in certain years to see them go on for 50 or more years.

The estate’s 2009 Proprietary Blend Melbury presents an intriguing combination of pure sensuality in its aromas and flavors, but backed up by serious tannins. Dark raspberry jam, flowers, sweet spices and crushed rocks all come to life in this deeply expressive, resonant wine. Sweet floral notes reappear on the finish, adding lift and perfume. In 2009, the Melbury is dazzling. It is also one of the more delicate wines in the lineup Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029.  I have been excited about the BOND 2009s since I first tasted them 18 months ago. My enthusiasm for those wines is surpassed only by the 2010s. The 2009s are sexy, radiant and impeccably polished, while the 2010s are more inward, structured and brooding in style. It is impossible not to compare BOND to Bill Harlan’s Harlan Estate. Although I am told the approach to farming and picking is identical in all the vineyards both estates look after, my sense is that the BOND wines are a little more vibrant than Harlan Estate, which tends to occupy a spot a little further out on the ripeness spectrum. It’s hard to know what more there is to say about BOND. These are simply some of the most utterly magnificent wines I have ever tasted, and a true testament that terroir not only exists in Napa Valley, but that these are some of the most privileged sites for making wine anywhere in the world. In my opinion, in top vintages, the St. Eden, which emerges from the red soils of Oakville, and the Vecina, from Vine Hill Ranch, are two of the greatest wines in Napa Valley.

Bond's 2011 Melbury is bright, focused and super-expressive. Rose petal, sweet red berries, mint and spices are all laced together in a totally effortless, gracious wine. The flavors are vibrant and striking in their purity, but it is the wine's harmony and round, spherical balance that stand out most. Silky and finessed to the core, the Melbury is the most delicate of the 2011s from BOND. Precise, lifted aromatics round out the finish. What a gorgeous wine this is.

The 2012 Melbury opens with exquisite floral aromatics and bright, red-fleshed fruit. Lithe and silky on the palate, with lovely overall precision, the Melbury is one of the more finessed wines in the BOND range. I imagine the 2012 will reward readers with a long and wide drinking window of pure pleasure. Some of the wines in the range are more attention grabbing. The Melbury draws the taster in with its seductive aromatics and sublime balance. What a gorgeous wine the 2012 has become.

Robert Parker 95P
From a 7-acre hillside vineyard overlooking Lake Hennessey, the 2012 Melbury, like its siblings, is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 100% new oak for a minimum of 24 to 28 months, then bottled unfiltered. The wine displays beautiful blackberry fruit, some charcoal, loamy soil undertones, forest notes, lots of spice, a full-bodied, multi-dimensional mouthfeel, and a super finish of 45+ seconds. Even in a vintage like 2012, this wine ideally needs 3-5 years of bottle age and should keep for 30+ years.

Displaying plenty of blueberry and black raspberry fruit, the soft, luscious 2011 Proprietary Red Blend Pluribus has more depth and concentration than it did from barrel. Full-bodied, opulent and complex, this beauty should drink nicely for 15-20 years.

Galloni 94+
Floral, lifted and precise, the 2011 Pluribus stands out for its magnificent balance, showing what was possible in this often unfairly maligned vintage. The 2011 is not a huge Cabernet but rather a wine that impresses for its nuance, finely cut fruit and fabulous sense of proportion. Hints of dark red cherry, plum, mint and wild flowers are laced into the expressive finish. What a pleasant surprise the 2011 Pluribus has turned out to be.

From a 7-acre parcel on Spring Mountain, the 2012 Pluribus Proprietary Red Wine exhibits the white flowers (acacia?), blueberry and black raspberry fruit that comes from this high elevation site. It is full-bodied but very tannic, backward, coiled and relatively tight, behaving in that sense more like a 2013 than a 2012. This wine is set for a long life of 30+ years. Forget it for another 4 or 5 years, then consume it over the following three decades.

The 2012 Pluribus has softened considerably over the last year. White pepper, cranberry, chalk, blood orange and spices are some of the signatures. Precise and finely sculpted, the 2012 is all about finesse. There is plenty to like here.

The 2011 Quella Proprietary Red Blend is performing better from bottle than it did last year from barrel. Lots of black raspberry and blueberry fruit intermixed with notes of wet rocks and spring flowers jump from the glass of this medium-bodied, fleshy, beautifully evolved 2011 that is already showing secondary nuances and complexity. This vintage offers immediate gratification and drinkability. It should age effortlessly for another decade or more.

Galloni 93P
The 2011 Quella is one of the bolder wines in the range. Dark red stone fruits, iron, smoke, plum, spice and menthol open up nicely in the glass. Next to the other wines in the range, the 2011 Quella is a bit brawny and rough around the edges. It will be interesting to see if further time in bottle softens some of those contours.

The 2012 Quella (from a steep 9-acre vineyard in the eastern Vaca hillsides) has an opaque purple color, a gorgeous nose of white flowers, sweet blackberry and cassis fruit, and a touch of vanilla and graphite. Full-bodied, like its siblings, with great fruit extract, terrific purity and richness, and high but velvety tannins, this wine should also benefit from another 3-5 years of cellaring and keep for 30+ years.

The 2011 Proprietary Red Blend St. Eden is even better than it was last year from the barrel. This is always a great sign and reflects not only excellent winemaking, but meticulous élevage and bottling techniques. One of the superstars of this much maligned vintage, this beauty offers up notes of forest floor, Christmas fruitcake, cedar, blackcurrants and sweet cherries. Broad, savory, full-bodied and opulent, it is already complex and delicious, and should continue to provide immense pleasure for 10-15 more years.

Galloni 94+P
The 2011 St. Eden is especially dark and brooding in this vintage. Inward and tightly wound, the 2011 nevertheless possesses gorgeous mid-palate density and finesse. Graphite, smoke, earthiness, dark cherry and plum notes gradually open up. Hints of sage, tobacco and menthol are all laced into the powerful finish. The 2011 St. Eden is a gem, it just needs time to fully come together. The 2011 Quella is one of the bolder wines in the range. From an 11-acre vineyard just north of the Oakville corridor, the 2012 St. Eden shows gorgeous, cedary Christmas fruitcake notes, black cherry and blackcurrant fruit, spice box, earth, and almost first growth Pauillac-like cassis and lead pencil shavings. Deep, full-bodied, and fabulously concentrated, this stunner flirts with perfection. Slightly more evolved than the Quella or Melbury, this wine may be the most drinkable out of the gate of all the Bond offerings in 2012. It should continue to evolve for at least 30+ years.

BOND’s 2009 Proprietary Blend Vecina, from Vine Hill Ranch, is fascinating to taste after the St. Eden. While the St. Eden is round and sensual, the Vecina is all about linear power and structure. Endowed with tremendous length and persistence, the Vecina presents endless layers of dark fruit and expressive aromatics supported by considerable tension and energy. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2034.  I have been excited about the BOND 2009s since I first tasted them 18 months ago. My enthusiasm for those wines is surpassed only by the 2010s.
