The 2012 Estate Chardonnay offers aromas of honeyed toast and cashews with a pronounced core of ripe nectarines and grapefruit plus a complimentary citrus lift. Medium-bodied, the palate provides great concentration with a nice yeasty character coming through in the long finish.

Sleek and generous, with peach, pear, spice and honey notes, sup- ported by refreshing, vibrant acidity. The spice and nut notes gain momentum on the finish. Drink now through 2022.—M.W.

The 2014 Hunting Hill Chardonnay has a white peach, spiced apple and honeyed pear nose with hints of ginger, brioche and almonds. Medium-bodied, the silken textured palate gives layer upon layer of stone fruit and savoury flavors plus excellent persistence.

There are few brothers that can successfully run a business together without going Cane and Abel on each other - but Paul (marketing), Michael (winemaking) and rarely seen Milan (vineyards) Brajkovich at Kumeu River make an amazing team. Mind you, having met their strong-willed mother Melba (managing director) it is clearly the boss, who's been with the estate not to mention the workers from the beginning, keeping them in line. If you can taste history, duty and family pride in a glass, it's there in the Kumeu River Chardonnays. Either that or it's the years of continual improvement from trials, failures, successes and all the experience and determination that goes with sheer grind. Melba's late husband, Mate (pronounced Matty), started this winery in the 1940s. "We planted a lot of different varieties," Paul told me. "The Chardonnay came out as a star early-on." Sixty odd years on and the brothers have progressed their father's life's work, now producing some of New Zealand's greatest Chardonnays, not to mention the world's.

The 2015 Hunting Hill Chardonnay displays a youthful restraint, yet nonetheless delivers an exciting array of stone fruit, pink grapefruit, ginger and marzipan notes with subtle hints of orange blossoms, crushed stones and lightly buttered toast. Medium bodied and tightly woven, is has a lively backbone supportting the generous flavor layers, finishing with great length and depth. As usual - just gorgeous!

Første årgang af Hunting Hill Pinot Noir 2014......

Winemakers note

The 2014 vintage was fantastic vintage with generous fruit. We achieved a beautiful ripeness in the Pinot Noir that is reflected in the wine. This is the second time we have released a Pinot Noir exclusively from the Hunting Hill vineyard. The vineyard is situated on a slope overlooking Mate’s Vineyard and produced a wine that has aromas of ripe cherries and spice and at the moment displays a lovely purity. No doubt, with bottle age this wine will develop the underlying forest floor aromas that make the wine so complex and interesting. The palate displays the lovely ripe fruit and is lively and fresh with good firm tannin which we expect to mellow with time in bottle over the next five years.

Tasted blind at Farr Vintners Kumeu/White Burgundy tasting. Crisp and taut on the entry, the 2010 Maté’s Vineyard Chardonnay does not quite possess the complexity of the Hunting Hill 2010, but offers appealing lime and fragrant frangipane and honey scents. The palate is crisp and taut, a little resinous with a slightly shrill finish that needs more bottle age. I would agree with Paul Brajkovich, who suggested that the 2012 is the better wine from Maté’s Vineyard, although this is no slouch at all!

The 2014 Mate's Vineyard Chardonnay delivers wonderful intensity with fragrant lemon, orange blossom and grapefruit aromas plus crushed stones, flint, toast and yeast extract hints. Medium-bodied, the palate is filled with vibrant citrus flavours and great acidity, finishing with excellent.

In 1990, Maté Brajkovich reworked the land and planted a new vineyard of Chardonnay vines on the site of the original vineyard that he and his family purchased in March 1944. The first grapes from this vineyard were harvested in March 1993, the year following Maté’s death. The resulting wine was released in November 1994 to coincide with celebrations marking the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Brajkovich Family’s arrival at Kumeu River. The Mate’s Vineyard is usually the most reserved and unyielding when young and this is even more so with the 2013 vintage. The nose is very closed, just giving hints of the golden queen peach and mineral notes that we expect from Mate’s Vineyard. On the palate however, the flavour is very concentrated and distinctly richer than the other 2013 wines, but maintaining a perfect balance and freshness that sets this wine apart and makes it wonderful. This is a wine of immense concentration that will be very long lived.

The Village Chardonnay has notes of apricots, honey, baking bread and a hint of nutmeg. Laced with citrusy crispness, medium-bodied and with a wonderfully silken texture, it offers a long minerally finish. Fantastic value.
